Weird Shroom

Hey I found a weird lookin shroom the other day. Instead of having gills on the bottom of the cap, it has like a sponge looking thing with tiny holes in it. I remember comming across something like this the other day on a shroom ID site, but I cant remember where it was and I dont feel like searching for it forever. Dark brown stem and cap and it was growing out of the ground by some ferns in a redwood forest. Its propably nothing, just curious as to what it is. Any Ideas?

Boletus, they have pores in place of gills. The majority are edible and good to eat but care must be taken with any species with red or orange pores. Take off the caps skin and slice into small strips fry in butter cooks very quickly.
Very nice with any meal.

In Kentucky I have seen very large mushrooms with a sponge looking surface (almost looked like large pores in skin) where the gills should be too- I have even found some that STAIN A DARK BLUE! However, I certanly dont think there "magic".

So, it should be noted that other 'shrooms can stain blue that are most certanly NOT magic 'shrooms.... in my case the lack of gills being replaced by a "sponge" gave them away quite obviosly... but the stained as blue as any cubie does.

No, I was sure it wasnt active. I was just curious as to what the hell it was. It looked nothing like the pic above though. It had a real thin hard stem, kinda like a small twig or something and the cap was very thin and kinda hard. I thought it may have been some sort of fungus.

I know that there is a name for the family of mushrooms that has this spongy looking shit instead of gills... however, I dont recall the name.

I was thinking that for a while, but it had definite pores and an inch long stem coming from the center. It did seam a bit more like a fungus in compositon than a shroom though.

There are Polypores that have that spongy sort of stuff under the cap, as well as the Boletes. Some will have actually pertrusions that look like teeth or spikes growing from underneath the cap. They are really neat to look at.
