If a dog managed to bite & latch onto me...I've always thought of going for the dogs eyes, if possible, while trying to keep my head and neck safe. Punching or gouging the eyes, really not so sure how well it would work  .

Only time I've been in a situation with a dog charging to attack was with an Australian Shepherd, probably a 50 to 60 pound dog.  As soon as I saw the dog charging aggressively I instantly thought to just hold my ground, it did what I thought it was going to and after running jumped up at the last minute to attack with jaws ready to snap down. Then, for a moment, things went into that slow motion-esque state and I gave it a swift solid kick while it was in mid air, right in its chest, hard enough to kick it off to the side. Damn near as soon as the dog landed back on the ground the owner came around the corner, got his dog under control and apologized.

...and that's also the only situation where I've had to physically defend my self  ....

Are you fucking kidding me dude?  You got kids on here telling people to offer up an arm and try to fight a pitbull one handed and you're gonna come after
Me? You're fucking right I would be there to save you because you'd be the idiot trying to run from a much faster animal.

With my insult out of the way I'll say your post was one of the better ones because you said look for a blunt object to go for a beatdown. For sure that's first resort. But come on. The entire thread is what would you do if a pit is charging you?

My entire answer is that I know if a pit is charging me, my instincts are going to tell me fight or flee. What I'm telling you specifically is that if a pit was charging me, I'm gonna kill it. I'm not asking you if I can kill a dog. I'm telling you. If I were to actually find myself in that situation (read BEING IN THE MOMENT), I would trust my instincts.

The entire deciding factor is fear. You can accomplish some
Pretty impossible
Things when you're not afraid, and some even crazier things when you  are pumped into a life or death situation with adrenaline.

DONT offer an arm and try to fight it with the other. DONT go for a rear naked choke-that puts it mouth right next to your face and throat.

But I just read the op again and I say for sure puff up and make noise, but that would probably come naturally. If you're the kind of person that's gonna do that, you're probably gonna be charging the pit too or at least making ground toward it in an attempt to show your dominance. If it's not backing down by that time, it's time to be a man.

You would get mauled and probably bleed to death if you tried to physically fight off a pit bull that means business.  I don't give a flying fuck how badass you think you are.  I understand fight or flight, I passed several years of high school and university science.  I get it, ok.  But I've also observed these dogs enough to know with great certainty that your chances are extremely slim of effectively combating a dog.  Am I saying, once the bastard has you in his teeth, to just let it kill you?  No.  Of course not.  You would at least want to try to get hold of its collar and cut off air supply or something.  Breaking sticks will pry their jaws open if they clamp down on something like your arm for example.  But once you get the dog off of you, it's just going to keep coming back for more.  They don't give up easily at all.  It's a wonderful reprieve from reality to imagine that, if faced with this situation, you would go Hulk and throw the dog around with your amazing adrenaline strength and catlike reflex but, unfortunately, the dog is going to be more instinctual than you are.

Your only real hope is to be armed in some way or have enough presence to have the dog stand down using body language - which is also very dangerous and not likely to work if the dog has ill intent in the first place.  Pits are pretty bad about attacking off their own property if they're the sort to attack in the first place.  Most good pits aren't going to be like that toward people, should they happen to break out of their yard or house, but will make quick work of cats or other smaller dogs.  It's just the breed.  I still love them.  All dogs have the capacity to be just as violent as the worst pit, they just aren't all as capable of inflicting the damage.  Most pits are extremely loving toward people with even minimal amounts of training.

I agree wholeheartedly with your second paragraph, especially how they wouldn't go looking for too much trouble out of their own territory,

But again I wasn't asking you if I could kill a dog. If you're afraid, that's gonna be your biggest problem. I'm not going out like that.

you'd tire out faster than you'd choke a dog out, I tried it with a german
shepherd, even used his choke collar, grabbed the collar, twisted it and
pulled with everything I had

stopped two dogs attacking (actually trying to kill) each other once and only got bit twice.

A long time ago, I was charged by a huge chow. I was scared shitless and there was NO WHERE I could escape him. I screamed "NOOOOOOOO" at the top of my lungs, and it just stopped charging and turned around and walked off  A few weeks ago, my little 30 lb dog was attacked at the park by 2 60+lb ers. I swift kick to the head with my steel toed boots stopped one and the other I kicked multiple times. Probably saved my dogs life (he did get bit, and they had him on his back) Another time My German shepard ate all of my kittens, so I puched her square in the top of the head and knocked her out. Watch some lion/tiger attack videos. Don't turn your back, stay calm, and if they charged, kick them in the face. So long as you are watching them you can avoid most lunge attacks

how are dresses related to this? im saying people who tell others to use some paragraph long techniques are not taking into consideration the fact that in a sudden life or death situation you are not following techniques except survival. and im wondering if you are  not carrying weapons how exactly will you "kill the pitbull"?

Best thing to do is go ahead and give it your arm and go for a choke. You could try to break a limb but then the dogs gonna let go of one arm and bite the other. I've heard people say to take your shirt off and wrap it around your arm. But who has time for that in a fight with a dog?

Give it your arm, take it to the ground, RNC. It's gonna kick and scratch like a motherfucker, but it's better than getting bit twice. so just crank down till he stops kicking and goes limp.

This.

Let it bite your forearm, but with your palm facing you, so its teeth hit bones, and not the arteries between them.

after that, wither choke it, or idealy break its neck.

you will not choke a dog out, especially while it has one of your arms and
you will not break a dogs neck unless you're dealing with a small breed
with a small neck like a chihuahua

I've wrapped my dog up and held him on the ground no problem to keep him from killing other peoples dogs. I know it's a little different when they are trying to kill you, but it didn't seem like there was shit he could do as long as I held on to the neck. Maybe the best you can hope for is to restrain it. I admit big dogs seem to be somewhat choke resistant.

Yeah I don't know where the "break it's neck" thing came from, not gonna happen. And in reality most people are to scared to try some shit like that on a dog. You'd probably have to be in survival mode just to hold on to it.

Good post.

I used to walk a pitbull and bull mastiff mix.  It lived with two other dogs, both of which I walked on leash, but the pit/mastiff I walked off-leash, per the owners' instructions.  People got insanely angry at me, screaming at me, picking up their kids and running, etc., when they saw me coming. And to be honest, I can totally understand that reaction, seeing that big thing charging into the vicinity of your six-year-old daughter is going to terrify you as a parent. But it was an extremely obedient and friendly dog.  I used to wrestle it full-strength in the house, going down on all fours and giving it everything I had, and always had a great time of it.  This dog had been used in fights before, too, but it had been really well rehabilitated and trained.  It's really all about the owners, I have quite a bit of experience with pits and other breeds that are considered scary, and they're some of the most intelligent dogs you can find.

This pit/mastiff did mount another dog once, though, while I wasn't paying attention.   He was neutered anyway, so it was all in good fun.

immobilizing a dog is feasible, it's what I did to my uncle's dog, the whole
point was to keep him from biting me and wait for someone to walk out and
get him, after a few minutes of yelling and dog wrestling I thought I'd try
choking it out using it's collar, a good 5 minutes with my hand twisted up
in it and pulling was wearing me out even faster. he came home a few
minutes after I'd given up on choking it, we were both in the yard laying
there motionless and he thought we were both dead, me and the dog both were
sapped of any energy by that point, he put the dog up and it recovered
quickly, I took a few hours of rest for me to recover and I was sore for a
few days after that

you really have to be in good shape to survive against a dog if you're unarmed
