a great days hunt.
    #1599147 - 06/01/03 08:44 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

so i spent the weekend in the vally and me and niggy with a pickin, the weather was nice and we checked out a few spots, one things for sure, this will be a very shroomy year.

the first sign of panaeolus we sumbled upon were these very odd almost conical panaeolus mushrooms, to be perfectly honest i havent a clue what they are.

Heres the gills shots

here they are all layed out

and the biggest one

now that those are out of the way on to the pans i KNOW to be active.

here we have a panaeolus, simmilar to subbaltaetus, but has a few differences, sor starters its grey, not fawn, the "belt" is much more choppy, and the gills are grey and mottled with splotches and lacking light margin.
the print os black and ive picked this mushroom berfore i know it to be active, but not as good as pan subb.

and finally panaeolus subbaltaetus, i picked about 60 passing over the smallest for further growth, these were on a composting dung heap niggy found and i can tell its going to be just covered in a few days as its been raining alot and will alot more. plus its a new heap. i ate them all for some intense hallucinatory results.

heres the grey pans next to some pan subbs

and heres all 3 types together for some compairerating

i would like to get some feedback on what the mystery pecies here might be, and if its not to much trouble, the grey ones too.

no bruising, but then pans seldom do, none of the pan subbs blued and i checked.
i only ate the pan subbs  (and the grey ones)  and OH how they fucked me up
the conic ones i dunno, i diddnt eat them yet, i wanna try them by themselves, that night i just wanted a sure trip.
and i got it oy heck did i get it.
the mysterious ones were growing on decomposed hay bales well trampeled and shit upon by cattle.  i even found more later on just plain composted straw (no dung)
i thought perhaps they were Panaeolus papillonaceus. but the whole consitantcy for conicness relly stumps me/
i also pondered pan sphinctrinus, but look, no way.
i found some pan sphinctrinus not to far away (where it always is) and it was quite characteristic of its  speceis and looked nothing like this, though they taste simmilar. (only ate 2 or 3 small ones) that familliar smokey mushroom watery flavour. i rally dont know. im open to just about any guesses.

i have a feeling the brown capped ones were some kinda non active panaelous. i ate a pile of them last night and felt nothing. but i did check the compost heaps again, to find another big load of mushrooms. then today i drove around a bit, and found a horsedung/straw heap which i picked another whole bunch from ..some were a little over ripe and kinda dry... but none the less things are pretty mushroomy lately

more rain will = more mushrooms, which will =

Hey Mitchnast!

Here are my guesses for your mystery pans.
Panaeolus acuminatus
Panaeolus papilionaceus
Panaeolus firmicola

Of course they're just guesses from someone who has very little experience with panaeolus.
Whatever their identity, they're interesting looking mushrooms. Hope you can get a positive ID.
