Is there a certain upper limit of fresh air (or pore size, etc of filter) for which browning goes smoothly?  If bag filters allow too much air exchange, will they try to fruit in the bag?

Yes, you want limited gas exchange.  Too much and your CO2 level drops, causing your substrate to be consumed for no benefit.  Too little and they don't brown well.

Also, when they start to fruit in the bags, go ahead and strip them, especially if you're using Unicorn bags.  The problem is their filters are not adequate and if the fruits drop spores while still in the bags, green molds follow within days.  As long as they don't drop spores, the mycelium is able to fight off the mold infection.

This is new to me RR.  I was sure that we were to let them grow in the
bag and remove them when the block was ready.

I have unicorn bags (and am very happy with them so far) and I will watch
for this with my blocks.

After three to four months, if the caps open all the way up and they drop spores, you'll see green within a week.

Do you have a recommended filter type with the unicorn bags?  Do you have another bag vendor?  Are those Belgians selling bags to the US again?

Now I have unrwapped all the blocks, cold shocked for 1 week, slapped them with a flat piece of wood, and then soaked for 24 hours. This is how they actually look



Something is starting to pop out, but already don't know if real pins or mutated blobs, again :crazy:

After some mutated blobs, some good mushrooms finally popped out! :cool: :cool:






I made some pf-tek cakes, too :smile:



Now I just have to wait to have enough of them to eat :tongue:

The other 2 blocks still looks like dormant... still hoping though :smile:

I'm curious to know what people do about second flushes.

Once a block has 1st flushed and been harvested, what next?

Leave it in the fruiting chamber or take it out?
Let it rest? How long?
After a rest soak it? 2 hours for an all sawdust block?

Slap it around post soak or before the soak?

Great question NSF. 

I have not been too successful with second flushes.
(I get a few fruits while the sit in the bushes outside)

There are the variables:

time == how long should blocks be rested between flushes
temp == what temp changes might help
H2O == dry it out, then dunk, then...?
Slapping == slap it again?  At the beginning or the end of the rest?

I let my blocks dry out a bit in a cool area fro about a week then rinse well and dunk to rehydrate.  I check on the blocks to feel the weight they don't all rehydrate at the same rate.  Then I put them back in the FC for the second third flush, if they make it that long.  Some only make it to the first flush if my FC is to humid.

I feel it is important to let them dry a bit from time to time and to rinse well occasionally if not in the middle of a flush to help rinse away some of the unwanted.

Today I picked this single mushroom for another block, 320 grams!







So, finally I had some results, even if from over-supplemented blocks :smile:

It almost looks like FP on the left and S75 on the right, but they may just both be S75.
Whatever the case, those are some tasty looking monsters alcatroz.

What type of pasta dish is that btw? Got a recipe? :smile:

That's a lovely looking yield atricoz...such an impressive block on the left!  So densely covered.

Shiitake do love to get massive once the margin unfurls...i like to pick them before that, just cause.  They're still delish and not too tough when massive, but more tender when smaller.

Strain should be 75, I received it from a friend, altough can't be sure, because he didn't purchase it directly from alohamedicinals.
That recipe has been made from my mother, home-made tagliatelle, other ingredients are olive oil, some slices of garlic, and maybe a little bit of onion I guess. I can ask if you want :smile:
