Shiitake fruiting on alder
    #3454454 -

After four months my shiitake blocks are finally fruiting. Well, at least one. I was up late last night and walked into my lab/work room to look at my myco stuff. I looked in one of my shiitake bags and sure enough, what do I see? I was so excited I woke my girlfriend up at 1:30AM. These bags are made of small alder woodchips and aspen wood shavings, no supplements. The three of them were inoculated with grain spawn on July 29th and they have sat since. About 4-6 weeks ago two of the bags had stalled, so I broke them up and shook them. They reinvigorated but water began to accumulate at the bottom so I cut a hole to drain them. They got this wierd yellow discoloration at the bottom, then started to exude this reddish brown metabolite. The bag I didn't shake never started to brown at all, but suddenly started to popcorn on the bottom. I'll post pictures of the popcorns as soon as I take the block out of the bag.

Man I hate school! I could have hourds of mushrooms growing in my house if I wasn't responsible for school! At least break is near.....

Nice pics. As far as school, though, you must be close to out?

We've got two weeks left. The rest of this week is review for exams next week. You can bet I'm going to have a lot of "fungi" over winter break. =)
