Fruiting Shiitake or Reishi from jars or cakes?

Is there any reason that I couldn't fruit shiitake or reishi from cakes made in wide mouth pint jars, just like I see others have fruited others mushrooms? I would of course use a sawdust substrate in the final jars and then turn them over onto perlite. If so, at what point do I remove the jar lids and drop the cake out of the jar?
The reason I ask is that I can reuse my jars and since I am a beginner, it would make sense for me to do this in small amounts at first. The bags would come later, after I am comfortable with the process.
Thanks, artfan1

My friend is wondering the same thing.
He has six pint jars of bran fortified alder chips colonized with Shiitake. He's going to use a few of the jars to spawn large bags, and he plans to fruit a couple as cakes, just to see what happens... assuming of course that he can get the cakes out of the jars intact.
My friend also has to find a way to lower the temps in his grow room below 85F or else wait until October to fruit. He lives on the outskirts of Hell.

He mentions that they are fruiting from "PF" cakes. And I have no idea what that means, though I did find a link explaining that brown rice and vermic is used. No sawdust? And all that I have read says only hardwood will work for shiitake. I guess if you experiment, you can do much more, and there are no rules written in stone.

Here is an image of shiitake I grew from a commercial grain based Mycobag which is essentially only grain, grain flours and vermiculite. No wood required.

Nice. I liked the discussion over at Mycotopia too. It is interesting to note what PF was saying about the stuff he cloned from FP and it being a weak strain. I have often wondered if he does this, especially given how much he charges for a pure culture. It is sort of shitty and shady of him, but he must be aware how easy they are to clone too. At any rate nice thread.

I gather from those posts that PF is not very up to speed on mushrooms in general. He expect a print color other than white? lol - you cannot see shiitake prints for shit once they are DRY, because the spores are white, and become very nearly invisible. Also, why would he not know that mycelliums are different? Shiitake mycellium is noticeably more whispy than cube, he does't know this? man.. those PF posts just made me feel that he really doesn't know what he's doing, and just happened across something that worked, in finding the PF tek.

Good point and agree with you. I thought that some of his comments were weird too. Saying that the spore prints looked like "bacteria" was sort of a give away. But he just brought up a point that I had pondered myself.

What do you mean? PF doesn't sell cultures. Stamets does, PF couldn't even clone a stamets culture. And then claimed it to be senscent. But, maybe it's just been grown out to the maximum growth. i.e. 3x petri, 3x grain, spawn dust..etc... In which case, yeah.. the mycellium would probably be tired. There's no question of the fruitability of stamets strains. Just order one of his kits. The problem obviously wasn't in the strain for PF, but the cultivator.

I know. I was just trying to say that I had often wondered if the strains PF sells in fruiting kits are the same ones he sells as pure cultures for 125 a pop, or if they are not as good, or older or something. At any rate it is not a big deal.
