popcorning shitake
    #2428287 - 03/13/04 08:00 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

oak sawdust inoculated from wild birdseed spawn back in october. it ate the food, then started popcorning like this months ago . it's been like this for ages. do i just wait for it to go brown, or should i do something new? it's sitting in the dark with temps in the mid 80s.

that mushed bit is where i just picked it up, not a contamination, btw.

hrmm, I have some shiitake I'm trying to get to fruit as well, inoculated onto alder chips/sawdust february 8th.  Lots of popcorning going on, but no fruits yet .  I tried cold shocking them for 24 hours or so a couple weeks ago but it didn't seem to work, might try it again for a little longer soon.

good luck

DH

I think they need to be submeged in cold water for 24 hours propr to pinning.

I though shitake formed a black crust around it then the popcorning pops up threw this black crust.

the kit I received from FP pinned without being submerged, but I might give that a try if all else fails. popcorning happens prior to the color change though. GG&MM and the pamphlet dealy that came with the kit both have pics of fruits forming on totally white blocks.

Hi there,
Shiitkae takes it's time. If you dunk it to early it will only fruit abnormal. But after the wood ist enough processed by the mycelia it will fruit well. But this takes some time. My first Lentinulas from December 2003 are by now fruiting well. And for the third time.

Patience is all it takes. And you will be very pleased when they fruit. It's a lovely shroom and so powerful. (it was newly found to kill the influentia virus!)

They will fruit after the mycelia turns brown/black.

Best wishes,
Cap.

May LOVE guide your way.

Shiitake mushroom extract is also invaluable for treating the symptoms of chronic fatigue.

Bran and paper pellets sterilised in a mycobag and injected with a shiitake mycosyringe
Started popping out fruits in vitro when the temps dropped.

Il let it rest then soak it again.

Im new to shiitake as well - growing it seems a different strategy to the others

I simply removed the bag as it started to popcorn, cut off the deformed shrooms (and ate)
Within a few days mushrooms started erupting from the block
It was really cool to watch and suprisingly it didnt need a humidity chamber the shrooms just grew in the dry air with no deformity.
They seem a lot more leathery than the other species
(Reishi was another one that didnt need the humidity chamber but with it the block stayed in the bag and it grew from holes made.)
The shiitake block has gone all chocolate brown on the outside and corky
I read that you dont want much humidity becuase it encourages trichoderma and the like. Just soak to fully recharge then maintain the drier environment. I perch min ein a cake cooling rack so the bottom gets airflow too.
Anyway like is said im new to this but its doesnt look as hard as i thought. When the block is spent il be tearing it open and using it to spawn logs- this has worked well for me with reishi, oysters and elm oyster in the past.

How do you spawn the logs with the old mycelium blocks ? Just tear them in parts and put them in a big bag together with the logs ?

drill hols in the logs and pack in the material inside the blocks
