backpacking. tips?
    #15733269 -

I really want to start backpacking. Hiking up in the wood for a couple of days.
Sounds amazing!
Can anyone tell me what i'd need to do, what i'd need to bring?
recommended reading, links, personal experiences.

Bear spray.

Of course, then there's the problem of eating vermiculite. On the bright side, it makes your poop and teeth glitter.  Just pretend it's christmas.

Mushrooms are wonderful. Only when your at camp though not when your hiking.  Lots of water and food. A small tent and a lighter. A sleeping bag and some freinds. All the basics right their.

Don't take a bunch of shit that you won't use.
I remember the Woods Drummer giving good advice:

Philosophically, the contents of the jar gave no advice.

Get a backpack, tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, water filter, some freeze dried food, a lightweight burner, and you are ready to go.  There is not much else to it.

Research where you are going and talk to people.  There are most likely some guidebooks out there for your area.

Know your limits.  There are some pretty gnarly hikes out there.  And what might not seem like much, can turn into a grueling terrible walk with 50 pounds on your back.

Try and keep your pack around 45 lbs or so.

I would bring a water filter, not water because that is too heavy.  You can drink as much as you want if you have a filter.  And bring at least three large water bottles.  It makes life easier.

Backpack, obviously. Get one that fits you perfectly. This is your life on your back so choose wisely.

Then food, water, clothes, and sleeping materials (sleeping pad, tent, bag, no pillow)

Then your essentials: First aid kit, knife/multi-tool, compass, map, some type of water purification and bottles, flashlight, whistle, some type of fire starter, toiletries (shovel and TP and the like), bear rope (depending on where you are hiking)

Then your not so essentials: Bug spray, sun screen, sunglasses, and whatever else.

You want to cut down on the weight as much as possible. Once you go hiking enough, you will know what to bring and what not to bring.

Check out one bag cooking. Its what I do and it works perfectly. Basically you break up your meals into FREEZER bags and then when your ready to eat just pour water into the bag and seal it then pop it into some boiling water to cook it. Usually I do this with rice, oatmeal, or anything that needs only water.

Hope some of this helped!

If you live on the east coast I would def recommend trying out the Appalachian Trail for a weekend. The trail is very well maintained and marked, usually not too far from civilization, and there are marked shelters along the way that you can utilize.

Just remember to Leave No Trace. Happy Hiking!

Go as far away from people as you can.  The wilderness is better when there are no boy scout troops around.

Oh, and bring hard liquor, beer is too heavy :smirnoff:

The Great Outdoors subforum of the Pub has some good advice there. I would also recommend checking out whiteblaze. The best place for backpacking information.

Snake Kit for TX? I used to always runs into snakes in CA.

I recently started hiking with poles. It seems like I can cover more terrain now. May help with stability on the trail?

a lot of thru-hikers swear on using poles...
not only does it help stability (and shock absorption)
but it also reduces strain/weight and wear and tear on your back and knees
especially for climbing and descending

knees back and feet take the brunt of the abuse when backpacking,
poles help a lot to relieve some of the burden

They work great for descending. Especially with a larger pack. I thought they were well worth the investment. I am definitely a fan now.

A horse, you will save alot of energy and if it dies you can eat it. Heard thier sweet and stringey. You should always bring a knife and a lighter incase it turns into a survival situation. Lots of water and power bars too.
