What's your opinion on tip jars?
#7817062 - 12/31/07 01:19 PM (16 years, 1 month ago) |
|

About four years ago I started noticing every conceivable kind of store starting to put out tip jars on the counter. I had never seen this before. I had only ever seen waiters/waitresses and delivery people being tipped before. Now I have to tip the person who gets my hot chocolate or the person who spends 20 seconds making my burrito in front of me? It just seems weird to me. It's like a new social paradigm or something.

I don't mind the tips jars. I saw one at Dunkin Donuts yesterday. Its a good place for me to get rid of pennies and nickels that would otherwise just end up spending eternity in my car's ashtray. With dimes I can take em or leave em. But I always keep my quarters. I don't know whose idea it was to start putting tip jars on counters across the nation but I'm sure the people behind those counters don't expect anyone to put much in there. Usually I notice that the jar has got mostly dimes, nickels and pennies, a few quarters and sometimes a dollar bill
I think it was a pretty good idea since most people are usually willing to part with change and gives these workers a chance to go home with a couple extra bucks in their pockets. God knows their paychecks are crap.
And Randall, just because theres a tip jar doesn't make it your obligation to leave a tip. You don't have to if you don't want to. Thats why its a tip.

I hate to visit the USA because of the tipping thing. It is never expected to tip in the UK unless you go to a posh restaurant or something. It makes people say all that 'have a nice day' shit when they don't really mean it.

I think tip jars are bullshit. I consider myself a very good tipper when it is appropriate (20-25% for service related jobs i.e. , waiter's/waitress's, bartenders, ect.) However the highschool kid who hands me the pizza i am picking up is definately not going to get me to put any money in a jar marked "tips". Its almost like they are begging for money. Im sorry but I work for my money and i dont get any hand outs.. so those people that have tip jars and arent working for the extra money shouldnt get it.

Isn't the tip included in the bill over there? Its called service charge or something to that effect. I'm not sure if thats the case in the UK but I've been told thats how it is in most of Europe. In the US tips are optional but customary, and tend to reflect the quality of the service.

I always throw my change in there because people that have tip jars need the money more than I do.

Back in the mid 70's a friend put and ad in the Dallas,TX paper saying "send one dollar". He got just less than $10,000.
If your a regular with these people you may want to tip a little. If going in one time and never going back, no way.

I work at Dunkin Donuts and the tips are what I consider good. I make at least 100 bucks a week in tips, pays for some habits, basically.
I also live in CT though, which is a snobby, rich state.
Where you live probably accounts for tip quality.

I love tip jars. I'm a waiter and usually end up with at least an extra $20 at the end of a good night.

Definately depends on where you work - When I worked in a posh boutique, people would ask for the "tip jar" when they were paying for their clothes/shoes (I worked on commission - so a tip jar was just gravy)
When I busted my hump at Kinko's on the lower east side - I could have donated blood, and no one would have tipped me.

yeah, I don't like those tip jars at weird places either.
although I do usually just toss my change in there. I fucking change. all of it, except quarters. I about died when I went to London and they didn't have pound notes, just pound (and I think 2 pound) coins. Their notes started at 5 pounds.
I think I made some vagrant very happy my last day there I dumped all the change i had accumulated from my trip into the hat of some guy sitting out by that pirate ship on the thames. I still have an oyster card too with like almost 4 pounds on it. I meant to leave it with the dude we stayed with, but found it in my backpack when I got back to the states.
anyway, tip jars at the fucking gas station are retarded. If you want a job with perks outside your normal salary, then be a server, delivery person, or work a professional type job where you manage accounts for big companies.
When I was a Senior account manager for a telecom company I was sent gift cards and free shit from the companies all the time. Limited brand (Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy), Abercrombie, Starbucks, Papa Johns, Hot Topic, Apple, and just general walmart and visa gift cards. Plus free candy from some famous candy shop up north and general gift/food baskets from those catalogs from my sales reps during the holidays. Still didn't make up for the measly $13/hr and hostile, abusive environment.
legally I was supposed to decline the gift cards, but no one ever did.
so yeah, those people need to stop being fucking beggers and get a better job than behind a Quizno's counter

he probably served good food. down in dixie if the eatin' is good and the server is nice you almost always get a fat tip. there is the exception, but i always drop at least 25%. if i don't feel like tipping i'll go eat at mcdonalds, no excuse not to tip in a sit down and get served type place
i dont do tip jars, ill put my spare nickels/pennies in ash trays in gas stations but thats about it.

because when i walk in a place like pizza hut to get a pizza made by a kid who gets paid 7$ an hour and have it handed to me by a counter clerk who does the same, i'm not in a huge rush to drop extra money in a jar for them. luckily down here tip jars are almost non existent. starbucks comes to mind but that place sucks balls

This is a weird thing for me too. My biggest problem with the tip jars is that they're communal. I go to a deli almost everyday. If the person who makes my sandwich does a really good job and is very nice to me, then they've made my day better and I don't have a problem with throwing a dollar into the jar. But I hate that the dollar is gonna get split with a bunch of other assholes. What's the point?

I think all this tipping is a bad thing. It kinda becomes an obligation to tip.
The owners ought to pay their personnel sufficiently so there is no need for them to bother the customers with what kind-of amounts to panhandling. Better wages, no tip jar. This is how it is in Holland. If someone wants to tip its given to the employee directly who puts it in his or her pocket and that is that. No sharing with other employees. If an employee's service truly sucks, and nothing can be done to improve that, you fire them.
A tip should be given as an exception and not expected as a social obligation. Customers should not be socially coerced to spend more money than what they came in for.
I'm generous in giving tips when the service is good. Usually I tip 10-33% when I do tip. If service sucks no tip, screw that.
Many places in Holland have a no tipping policy, to not annoy the customer and cause friction among the staff. Good policy
Employees should be paid better and a tip should be a truly voluntary exception.

I have worked a job with a tip jar and it was an extra $2.00 hour wages so it made a huge difference for me.
I live in a small town and frequent the same places, like where I buy coffee they see my truck pull up and start making it before I'm inside that's the type of service that deserves a tip. Our local deli I always call in my order since I don't like waiting for them to make it and it's always done and done correctly so they get a $1 every time for the good service and saving me time.

one thing I don't like is at places that you use your credit card like deli's and crap they should not have TIP AMOUNT printed on the receipt I find this annoying.

Truer words have never been spoken.
Tipping as a social norm has made waiters and waitresses into robots. It truly has. They all seem so fake to me. Sure, they are nice, but it's obvious that they just want a good tip.
I want to go somewhere where a tip is not expected, and see what the waiters/waitresses are like there. The differences would be huge.
And as for the tip jar at the counter of places, I will leave a tip for them if they talk to me, but don't go out of their way to do it.
I tip them if I like them I suppose. That's how it is supposed to be done anyway, I guess.

i fucking hate tip jars. shit in this country is too fucking expensive anyway. the only people who deserve a tip in my opinion are bartenders servers, food delivery and maybe detailers. they dont get paid much, their paychecks mainly rely on tips.
all of those other mother fuckers can get bent. my opinion is if you want a tip, you had better go above and beyond your normal quality, enough for me to notice, otherwise youre just doing what you get paid to do. even if you make minimum wage. we all started at the bottom, deal with it.
me and my partner usually stop at this gas station on the way out of our shop, theres a subway in the gas station. they put a tip jar out like a year ago or something, and there are these two black chicks who ALWAYS used to "remind" us that we didnt leave a tip, and for a while i used the excuse that i dont carry cash on me, but then i finally got fed up with them telling me i didnt leave a tip, so i told them "you make a half ass subway sub every time i come here, it takes you less than 5 minutes, what kind of fucking tip do you expect? when i get a quiznos quality sub in 1 minute flat, then youll get a fucking tip, until then slightly above minumum wage will have to do."
everyone wants a fucking tip anymore, even if they suck at what they do.
