Hammocks are the shit. I highly suggest ditching your tent and getting one. http://hennessyhammock.com/ makes some very nice ones, handmade too.
Benefits of a hammock:
- Extremely lightweight, (~1.5lbs or less), takes up VERY little space when packed - 10x more comfortable than sleeping in a tent (never have to worry about sleeping on sticks and rocks and inclines, or waking up in a pool of water...). Best camping sleep you can get, hanging between two trees. Good for the ol' back. - You can set up camp anywhere there are trees. No need to find perfectly flat ground or well drained areas. Hell you could set up over a swamp if you wanted. - Much better air circulation than a tent, but complete protection from the elements and bugs.
Downsides: - Little to no insulation on the bottom side, so in colder weather you need a thermal wrap or covering that insulates the bottom of the hammock. They sell these separately.

Ooh, never seen those hammocks before. I'm bookmarking that right now. That'll be great for next summer.
also, a rope saw is something i never thought of. Thanks.

Shroomism, The one downside of hammocks that you missed is the biggie for me...you have to have trees! Much of my camping (maybe as much as half or more) has been done in places without anything to tie a hammock to. Thats why I never looked into them much. But other then that they seem like a great option.
DRT- Go poke around in the Outdoors Forum (its a sub forum of Gathering) for more info. Its slow in there, but most anything you need to know has been covered in the past or can be answered by the regulars who pop in there.

I think you should have phrased the title of this thread differently.Hiking and backpacking are two different things.
But as for the question,
I really enjoy hiking. In fact, if all goes well, I'd like to head up to the park sometime this winter when there's plenty of snowfall, and go snowshoe hiking and camp out for several days.
Hopefully by that time I'll have some mushrooms to try for my first experience. Or second or third.
This last summer I went hiking several times. Besides the fact I need to get a smaller pack and carry less weight (I didn't enjoy that), I think it's my special way of getting away from it all.
Just a pain to get up their sometimes. (I ride the bus)

shit, if only I could remember the hills I used to go hiking in.
If you wandered around there enough you could come across some massive abandoned iron and gold mines with lots of fun equipment left laying around.

You don't HAVE to have trees... trees are just ideal. For example I have heard of people using them in the desert, and above the ridgeline.. laying them on the ground but using hiking poles as their "poles" holding it up. There's a few demonstrations on their site as seen here: http://hennessyhammock.com/use-as-a-tent.html

Thats a cool demonstration. Hadn't seen anyone use it like that. But it is set up more as a tent (not supporting your body weight off the ground) and that kinda defeats the purpose of a hammock. I doubt you could rig a system very easily that could actually support your body weight. It would take some seriously strong hiking poles (I only carry one as it is) or sticks (which are scare when theres no trees to start with) and a pretty elaborate rigging to make it stable.
So I just stick with my tent. Its not as light and compact as a hammock, but its not very big either. My tent rolls up to about 13" long and weighs under 4 pounds. Not bad for a 2-man tent. If I went to a one person model I could cut the weight in half but I like to be able to throw my gear inside with me if the weather is bad (and still have room to be comfortable).

Yeah, it's set up more like a tent... (it's assuming you have 2 hiking poles and some rope to work with) you wouldn't really be able to support your body weight with poles like that, you'd just have to be laying on the ground. The poles just give it some structure and allow you to hang the rain fly. Also since the bottom fabric isn't really waterproof, you'd need some kind of vapor barrier underneath and a pad to protect you from the cold.
But yeah.. tent is probably the best way to go when there's not a lot of trees to be had. Just thought I'd show you that.. the versatility of a hammock!

Bivvy bag all the way. As light and compact as a hammock, and in combination with an inflatable camping mat SOOOO comfy. If you get a good, Goretex one (like they use in the army) you don't even need to use a sleeping bag if it is warm

I absolutely despise bivy sacks. Even the ones that are supposedly breathable retain water inside the bag from body and breath. I wake up and I feel all wet and nasty. Oh, and unless you have a really expensive bivy that props up the face end by itself the mesh will be right on top of your face and will collect condensation and the bugs will bite you and when it rains it will fall onto your face, so you have to squirm around and try somehow to keep the mess suspended off your face even though it just keeps falling back on your face, You can try to sleep on your side but then the condensation will collect more than ever. I hate bivies. And I hate all supposedly waterproof breathable material. It does the same thing. First of all, it loses it water proof-ness after some time, and even if you re-spray it it won't fix it. And say you're working out hard in a pair of waterproof breathable pants. Even if it keeps the rain from penetrating you, it doesn't really breathe well. You'll end up being soked, just from the inside. I highly suggest everyone to stay far away from this material. It outrageously expensive anyways.

Gore-tex regenerates by washing in the mashine. The new stuff is pretty amazing.
My new ski pants don't collect any moisture at all even when zipped up into the jacket.
And I'm a sweaty motherfucker.
But I do have to agree. Cheapo waterproof bivvy bags can get quite wet on the inside. An old one I had that cost 10 bucks and was of some kind of waterproof nylon felt like sleeping in a Fruiting Chamber
