Backpacking Across Europe for a Month
#5792360 - 06/26/06 12:22 PM (17 years, 7 months ago) |
|
|
On July 16th I am boarding a flight to Barcelona. Once there I land with nothing but the bag on my back and a Eurail pass that allows me unlimited train and boat travel between 18 European countries for a span of 21 days.
I plan on chilling in Barcelona for a few (and meeting up with Deepman) before heading to San Sebastian and soaking in all the sights and sounds while thinking about Hemingway getting drunk and writing The Sun Also Rises. From there, I'm going to head into southern france, swim down by the Riviera, and take a few bike rides through sunflower fields in Provence.
From France I'm going to take a train up to Amsterdam where I hope to meet up with cybrbeast and Annom and generally just chill the fuck out for 3 days tops. From Amsterdam I go to Denmark to check out Krishna's old digs at Copenhagen. From Copenhagen I take a boat over to Sweden to explore Stockholm, and from Stockholm I head down to Germany, specifically Berlin, where I'll try to meet up with In(di)go.
What's beautiful about this trip is that nothing is set in stone, I am free to wake up one day and decide to go anywhere I want that's accessible by train and I can do that. I'm renting out my room in my apt. for a month in order to pay my way around Europe - I'll be staying in youth hostels exclusively, looking to meet interesting people along the way.
I can't wait. I'm gonna lay in grassy french fields and read books. I'm going to videotape train rides through valleys and mountains. I'm going to start writing again. I'm going to write as much as I can, everything I feel. I'm going shopping tomorrow for the perfect brand spanking new blank book to record my thoughts in.
Have any of you backpacked across Europe? Any general tips? My girlfriend is lending me the pack she used when she did it a few years ago, and I'm so excited I want to pack now - 3 weeks in advance.

This'll be the first one that isn't rife with hedonism.

Best of luck. That should be one kick ass trip. I was planning to go traveling around europe for a month this summer but instead im gona backpack round thailand instead. Just be carefull not to get ripped off price wise, some parts of europe can be pretty expensive!

It's not my first time heading over there, and the goal of this trip is definitely to budget myself wisely, so I should be fine. Plus, when I get to Berlin I'll be staying with my sister at her apartment (she is living there for the summer studying German) so I won't have to pay for accomodations in Germany. I've heard Stockholm is fairly expensive though, and Barcelona too.
Oh well, I can survive on very little food and lots of cheap hashish. WHat did I say about hedonism again...?

sweet, man!
i'll do my best to meet up with you in berlin... and if that doesn't look like working i'll head out to amsterdam... neither of the both is too far away from here... plus, it would be cool to see annom and cybrbeast again (maybe even a few other shroomerites)... berlin would be way cheaper for me, though, since i would be able to stay with my brother for free...
we will see... one thing is sure: you will have a great time...

Good Luck! Have a great time thinking about existentialism and all that great relaxed philosophical jazz. Hope your trip is a great experience.

That's exactly what I wanted to do.
I'm too lazy to actually do it, though.
If you don't mind me asking, what's your budget going to be for this trip?

hey, when youre in berlin, you wont be far from hamburg. if you can, go over to hamburg to spend a friday or saturday night in Reeperbahn (aka the Kiez or St. Pauli). They got some fun nightlife all through the night (and Hamburg is germanys greenest city if you go during the day.) ps, when on the Kiez, becareful and avoid fights...

Meeting up with Shroomerites is always a priority, wherever I'm headed. I remember looking through the pics of the Europe gathering and thinking these all seemed like super-chill folk I'd love to meet.

If our paths cross while over there that'd be cool but a big point of this whole trip is the fact that I will be travelling alone..it's been a long time since I was alone, and I've lost a lot of perspective on myself. I'm looking to find myself all over again, especially through writing.
Really, the #1 thing I want to do is lay in a field of sunflowers in central/southern france with a bottle of red wine and pen and paper.

Good shit partner. I hope you have an excellent time.
Make sure you talk to all the locals you can. You wouldn't believe how nice the people over there can be. Free meals, good drink, etc.
Oh, and stay away from my Chateau while you're on the Riviera

Thanks man. Fuck I love that avatar!
HELLA: Well I have to figure that tops I'll be spending about 40 dollars a day. But I'm obviously going to attempt to do this as cheaply as possible. I got an ISIC (myisic.com) card that gets me student discounts at museums and hostels throughout Europe and I don't need three big gourmet european meals a day or anything. I'll probably be eating lots of small things like panini and fruit. The biggest amount of money I'll spend anywhere will probably be the two days of incessant smokage in Amsterdam.

Bringing both my digital camera and my mini-DV camcorder, I plan on getting lots of good footage to edit into some sort of music video type thing.

Sounds awesome, I'd probably meet you again in Amsterdam, I really need a find-myself kind of trip this summer and to see my friends again
Certainly your trip sunds great, and it will probably even better than it sounds. I learned a whole deal about myself in the 5 days of LSD symposium, I can't imagine the things you'll discover in this one.

I just got word from my old boss I'll get to work for about a month and a half, add that pay to the paycheck I just got and that equals a trip somewhere while taking a little break off school.
Or I could move out of my parents.
God damn tough decisions.
Of course I'll try and get another job when the other one is over, so maybe I can do both.

Sounds great. Drop me an email when you're in the area and we could meet up. It'd be cool to also see Ingo, ohmatic and Deepman again Deepman you still have that awesome pic from the gathering in your sig
If you come to Utrecht you could see our place and town and also you might be able to get some of our nugs if our grow works out.

I should just skip Amsterdam and come hang out in Utrecht for a couple of days instead. I've done Amsterdam before, and I don't want to get caught too much inside its cannabinoid gravity ring. It would be really easy to...Maybe I'll take a train into Amsterdam, go to The Grey Area (American-run coffeeshop that is fucking awesome!), pick up some delicious kif, and then head to Utrecht from there..

I never actually went into the Pink Floyd coffeeshop when I was in Amsterdam...I should probably check it out.
Man, hopefully we can time it so I can run into Deepman all over again but with you ohm in Amsterdam or something...it'll be hard to figure out all the timing cause I have no set plan whatsoever..

Been rethinking this plan a little and I fear I may be stretching myself too think if I aim to hit up Denmark and Sweden...I think I should focus on hiking the lower alps and exploring various areas of France and Germany instead.

since you will be in stockholm, you can take the silja line or viking line ferry across the baltic to helsinki and come visit finland
from finland, you can easily get to estonia by ferry..fast ferry takes 1½ hours and then go from eurorail to wherever from there...there are even ferries from helsinki to riga, latvia or germany ...even denmark

I'm not doing Italy, and I'm actually skipping Paris because I've been there five times (when my sister lived there for four years I visited her a lot) but I am definitely looking to hike along the Alps near the Swiss-French border.
