AFAIK the Bible was written by brown people. The image you cite was created by white people whose ancestors found the brown people's writings highly palatable, then lost sight of its origins and turned all its characters white.

re:2- Variation of degree IMO.  An observation is a statement based on a certain set of data.  Belief is the same, but more intense.

What I was getting at was more along the lines of how the you and the religious people you posted about are remarkably similar in the end.

Case A: Religious Wackos-  This girl directly confronts their religion.  In response they self-affirm by threatening her with violence and even death.

Case B: OrgoneConclusion- The actions of the Religious Wackos further confirm observations by OC of the duplicity of religious wackos.  In response OC self-affirms by starting a discussion which generally centers around the stupidity of religion.

Case C: Cups- Cups sees that both the Religious Wackos and OC are doing the same thing in different ways.  In response he self-affirms by pointing this out to OC.



In all 3 cases, I am thoroughly unimpressed.  Which is just more.

i'm not a devotee of any tradition, but i think it's unfortunate that religion, especially christianity, gets a rap like this now. there is a rich intellectual undercurrent in religion, it's just hidden and fundamentalist assholes don't make it any easier to see. personally, while i could never commit to christianity, the philosophy and history of it is immensely interesting to me. in my younger days i didn't understand it, and i hated religion and religious people for a number of reasons. i've grown to respect it and see the good as well as the bad.

being religious doesn't mean you can't be an intellectual. quite the contrary. scripture is designed to convey a multi-layered message. on the surface you have the pedagogical; the morality tales and rules. beneath that you have the deeper stuff that tries to convey the mysteries of the soul and its relationship to the universe (and of course the ultimate reality that informs it). in my opinion, religion has always been an effective tool to systematically throw enormous amounts of information across populations in an effort to stimulate their intellectual growth over long periods of time. it's man's first attempt to take control of his own evolution. yes, it is misused, misinterpreted and perverted, especially now. but at its core it's beautiful stuff.
