The face of Christianity exposed (again)!

A female atheist high school student in a public shool got a judge to order the removal of a prayer banner. So how did her fellow self-proclaimed Christian peers react? Read the full ugliness here.

The poor girl was forced to transfer schools because of the threats of physical violence.

There are dumb, mean spirited, biggots like that in every facet of our world; it's unfortunate that a large number of them hide behind the banner of god to say and do evil things while refusing to tolerate differences.

Religion is a good idea, it can help some people; but I'll be damned if I don't have some serious misgivings about a large amount of its population.

Well I have a theory, 80% of the world is on a low end of the intelligence scale.
There are exceptions, but for the most part this rings pretty true.

These people are for the most part quite simple, if brought up with a standard set of  morals; they follow them. Religion is silly, it's a bartering greed based system of "I trade good deeds for eternal pleasure, or trade bad ones for eternal torment."  These morals, albeit flawed, can guide them to a better life where they are more motivated to be caring or supporting of others. This isn't perfect, but I've seen many cases where religion can give people a path in life where they otherwise wouldn't find one.

Now I understand the arguments of "But religion causes so much damage and hatred." These are excellent points to make, but I think that with or without our lovely fictional bible characters, people would be killing each other anyways, insanity begets insanity, if people are so easily enthralled by literature, they would be likely to be enthralled in other forms of differentiation from others.

How is their response when their beliefs are threatened any more pathetic than your need to pat yourself on the back when yours are affirmed?

Stupid move on that girl's part imo. I prefer to accept the state of things and take into consideration the social repercussions from my potential actions, rather than base them on an attempt at reaching some sort of ideal, no matter how logical the ideal may seem. I don't go around proclaiming my lack of belief in deities or an objective moral code, as the only potential benefit is some ego-gratification which doesn't warrant the negative social interactions i will experience. I also don't openly smoke cannabis or do other drugs in public as making a statement about the ludicrousness of prohibition doesn't warrant the legal and social repercussions.

I would call it being a realist. Do you think you have any noticeable effect on the way the world functions? I sure don't think that I do. If you aren't going to change anything why is it better to remain discontent with the nature of things?

No, but if I were an individual in one of those groups I would only consider joining in protest if the movement had become big already. What about all of the people who stood up for their rights that never got to see any change come of it? Were they better off spending their whole lives in discontent with nothing to show for it?

Sometimes standing up for a principle is worth whatever happens to you personally. Were there not humans who believe this, forced gladiatorial games to the death, the feeding of slaves to lions for entertainment, and widespread slavery might well still be the rules of the day.

It's what has elevated western society above the systematic institutional raping, genocide, and ethnic cleansing that still goes on in other parts of the world because no one will stand up to to it for fear of personal harm.

It's ironic that you rile against the very thing that may well be responsible for your being alive, relatively free, and prosperous today.

Why not just kill yourself?

If I had a magic button that would wipe out the entire planet (myself included) I would push it in a heartbeat.

I'm glad people have done it in the past, but I sure as hell wouldn't want to spend my life in a constant struggle and state of discontent to benefit some humans down the line when I can no longer experience. Hell, I doubt people even are any happier because of it as most people seem to only compare themselves to those who have more than them.
