Re: I really don't like elitist vegetarians.......like at all. [Re: Visionary Tools]
    #15517171 -

Auto-Summary
The post discusses various ethical and environmental arguments regarding meat consumption, hunting, and animal welfare. The author argues that being ethically unambiguous is impossible due to the ethical implications of modern comforts like electricity, heating, and transportation. They defend their hunting practices, citing the importance of population control and the benefits to the environment. They also challenge the assumption that a vegetarian diet is inherently more ethical or environmentally friendly, emphasizing that a balanced approach with moderate red meat consumption can be healthier and more sustainable. The author encourages open-mindedness and discourages judgmental attitudes towards others' choices.

I seem to have lost track of what it is we're arguing about.. I was just going to observe and make a few comments, but I think I'd prefer to get this off my chest at this point:::

I at first, thought this argument was regarding ethics:  Is it ethical to kill?

Then it became one of entropy.  What is a more 'efficient' diet, isn't the same as 'what diet has a smaller carbon foot-print'.  So, what are we arguing here? I'll touch on everything for good-measure.

Ethical?  You think that not eating meat makes you a more ethical person.  Okay.  Thats fine.  I disagree, and I don't need any kind of statistics or information to back that up at all.  You have your 'opinion' about it, I have mine.  You think kiling unnecessarily is unethical.  So do I.  I'll take a spider outside before I kill, because it isn't necessary.

Let me ask you a question to think about while you read the rest of this:  Have you ever seen an animal starve to death?  I have..

If you think that there is no un-ethical bi-product of your own self-righteous lifestyle, you're mistaken.  I could write an entire book regarding the 'ethical implications of a self-righteous American youth', but it suffices to simply say for now, your existence is not 'ethical' by your own measurement.  I already have enough information to make that statement:  You have a house, yeah? You have internet? yeah?  You're an educated citizen of this country, yeah? You ride your bike or drive your car on our streets, yeah?

You enjoy the comfort of a home heated with natural gas, yes?  Hows the electricity?  All of these 'comforts' you so enjoy, have tremendous ethical implications, you either deny, or haven't looked into. Do you know where your natural gas comes from?  Do you know the environmental and ethical implications of using hot-water to wash yourself?  It isn't necessary.  Cold water works just as well.  So...Why do you shower with hot-water?

Want to be completely ethical?  Kill yourself.  I PROMISE, its the only easy way to achieve it. Oh, theres other ways, but I don't think you'll make it, nor like it.

Is it ethical that I hunt and kill?  Do the research, before you say its a 'dick move'.  You've no clue what me and my culture do for you and yours.. I'd bet that you enjoy camping on BLM land and state-parks, hiking and riding and so forth.  How do you think those places are protected?  With what money do you think they are maintained and protected for your enjoyment?

What do you think would happen if we didn't try to control wild animal population?  You think its like Bambi? Just happy little forest animals, doing their forest animal things? You think if we just leave them alone, they'll all be cool and safe, and happy? If your answer is 'yes', we are done here, and I can clearly conclude that you are ignorant, and too self-righteous to educate.

*Quick side-note: Much of the game we hunt, isn't even native. Do you know the 'ethical implications' of letting non-native species run rampant? Find out, and find out good before you answer that..

Do you think its more ethical to let an animal starve to death, or to kill it?  Take your time, do the research, and answer carefully before you go talking about how my killing is 'unnecessary' and that I do it for 'enjoyment'.  Do you know what a drought is? Do you know what happens in a drought?  Find out.  Find out, good.

On the contrary, I don't enjoy it.  It still troubles me emotionally, and I've been doing it for 20 years.  I enjoy the outdoors, and spending time with my family, but killing?  Its not something I take lightly.  I respect and care for these animals so much more than you will ever realize. Assuming that I take life and spill blood for fun, is offensive on the highest level.

You don't know me, nor do you understand me. I'd be happy to get to know you so that maybe you can make some understandable assumptions about me, but until then, you shouldn't assume you understand me.  I don't pretend to understand you, and I wouldn't make assumptions regrading the content of YOUR character, until I could substantiate it.  When you do that, we call that being a 'judgmental prick'..

Lets touch on the whole entropy/carbon foot-print thing.  The beef industry is tremendously inefficient in terms of entropy.  This is true.  I remember reading all the data back in college.  Its pretty scary, really.  So yeah, in strict terms of environmental impact, a vegetarian diet blows a omni-diet out of the water.. I can say that without batting en eyelash.

But, since we're having a pissing contest here, in terms of entropy and efficiency, my moderate red-meat and vegetarian diet blows your vegi-diet out of the water.. I guarantee it. And since we're really seeing who can piss FURTHER, I'd bet that my diet is quite a bit healthier than yours, and probably easier and less expensive to maintain, and I know for a certain fact, that it tasts way, way, WAY better.  (I know this, because I was a DEVOUT vegetarian for over a decade)

You said what I do is 'a dick move', without even the smallest amount of information about what I do, and why I do it.. I say, thats kindof a dick move.. Before you go trying to peg me as one of those hicks that drives around in a huge truck, and drives four-wheelers to track and kill game, think again..That would be a tremendously inaccurate assumption, again, and a dick-move.. Again.. Like I said, I'm happy to get to know you so you don't make any more 'dick-move' assumptions. . .

Auto-Summary
The author debates various ethical topics, including the morality of killing animals for food, the environmental impact of different diets, and the ethical implications of maintaining wildlife populations. They argue that their hunting and eating habits are necessary for conservation and personal enjoyment, and that a strict vegetarian diet is not necessarily more ethical or environmentally friendly. The author also criticizes others for making assumptions about their character without understanding their motivations or lifestyle.

now I keep hearing this but as I pointed out already in water use alone
the whole thing is a lie you're being fed y someone pushing their own
bullshit agenda, farming uses 80% of the water in the US, 20-50% of the
water is wasted because the plants dont use it all while in cattle it uses
1% of the agricultural water and all most all of it is used b the animal.
there's minimal loss

http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/wulv.html

raising of food crops is far more intensive than cattle, cattle is
virtually a set it and forget it thing for 18mos while machines are
in constant use in field crops... seriously... 1300 gallons of water for
2lbs of rice and people are claiming that raising livestock wastes water?
we can imagine how badly they skew the numbers for everything else

in case folks forgot

Can't believe someone actually read all that..  Thank you, Inf.
I generally never like to argue about these things, but I felt offended.
I know the vegetarian thesis very well.  I did it for over a decade.  It is flawed, and tremendously

Pris, I'm not arguing with you, and you have some valid sources cited there, but you're forgetting about the agricultural processes that raise the food to feed the cattle.  This article you posted states it clearly:
-"The biggest threat today to freshwater ecosystems is agriculture. Agriculture is the raising of crops and livestock for food."

Okay, check this out.. Without using the internet, or citing any sources, I'll explain the argument in the simplest terms possible.  (This is a rare occasion, folks)

I'm not going to do the research to find the exact percentages, I'm going to guess, based on what I remember.

So, lets play pretend.

Pretend the world is Nebraska.  (to simplify) No bigger, no smaller.

Of the available USABLE land-space in Nebraska, we can 'harvest' the sun's energy, and turn it into calories, given a certain amount of water, as well as other forms of energy.  (Fossil fuel, i.e. diesel)

Lets pretend, that the TOTAL amount of solar energy that reaches 'planet-Nebraska' is represented as a unit, or '100%'.

Now, after the atmosphere reflects, and then filters this, theres maybe .0001% remaining, available to use.. The only way we have of 'using' the energy, is by growing plants.

SO, now we take our .0001% of that original 100%, and we make a choice: Do we grow grain, and vegetables for our own consumption, or grain and hay for animal husbandry?

Option 1. We grow for us.  We take that .0001% solar energy, and we put it into grain, and vegetable.  For purposes of simplification, lets say we grow soy. A tremendously efficient plant.

Once the plant has grown to maturity, and its yield can be exacted in terms of caloric value, what we have is a small percentage of that original .0001%.  The true number is around .001% or someting along those lines..

So with option 1, we get .000001% of that original solar energy we were able to 'harvest' on planet Nebraska.

Lets take a look at option two:
We grow for cattle.  Alfalfa tends to be the most efficient crop.  So, we take that .0001% and we grow alfalfa.  After its life-cycle, we'll get about the same .001% as we did when we grew soy.  So at this point, we're still at that .000001% again..

So THEN, we take our alfalfa, and feed it to cattle.  The cattle eat, drink, and live their lives, until they're ultimately slaughtered and consumed.  We remove the bone, skin, and when we can finally package, and exact the cattle's caloric value, we again, lose a huge amount of energy.  Again, the number was something like .001% of that .001% we got from the alfalfa, which was .0001% of the original solar energy we had to work with.

So now, the number is .00000001%.  Its a tremendous loss from .000001%.  This cannot be argued.

Its entropy.  Its not 'statistics', its pretty basic math.
It's the laws of thermo-dynamics.  I didn't write them. I just obey.

Please, don't go picking that apart saying, 'Oh, Snap, Renzo, you made a mistake! You had one-too-many zeroes in your math!'

Like I said, I made those numbers up.  They may or may not be accurate.  The exact numbers are, however, very unimportant.  I was simply trying to demonstrate a relatively complex argument, in very lay terms.

One last thing though.  This doesn't include 'free-range' cattle either.
Much of our land-mass here in this country is unusable for agriculture.  Its rocky, and impossible to cultivate. In this case, we do 'free-range' cattle ranching.  Still, cattle must be fed during the cold months, and there is some very certain inefficiencies there, but its a far-cry from the corporate cattle industry.

This also doesn't include what I do.  The energy I get from the animals I kill, is 100% efficient in terms of thermo-dynamics.

Like I said, its supply and demand. The problem isn't ethical.  Its us.  There is TOO FUCKING MANY of us, and WAY too fucking many 'first-world' citizens who think its okay to eat beef or chicken for EVERY SINGLE meal.

Yeah man, beef is pretty awesome. Math is also pretty awesome.

To clarify, I'm not pretending to 'have it all figured out', at all.  I've got this system, and I've got this theory behind it. So far, I feel like its working for me, and I don't like to think what I do is a 'dick move'; I am a tremendously moral man, and I provide for myself the best way I can figure.  I really don't like to bash other people's lifestyles and diets (Like the title of the thread suggests), but I figured since we were having a full-bore pissing contest, I'd go ahead and weigh in.

I'm also not pretending to have even my own system perfected.  I'm at a point where I can either eat food I've either grown, or killed, or at least was grown or killed locally. Still, I won't lie, I grub on some McDonalds once in a while. I like Pizza.  I fucking LOVE coca-cola, and I love salami. I still buy mac n cheese, and all the 'normal' shit.

no, you've not cited any sources you only made a few claims and I have
mentioned several times in this thread that grains are a minimal part of
the diet, they arent fed grains all the time, it's yet another way you're
being misled. grain is a supplement during winter, it's a 'hot food'
because of the extra carbs, the rest of their diet is grass and hay. when
they get sent to a feed lot for finishing they arent eating much grain
there either, they're eating silage and pulp from other ag processes like
sugar beets, shit that would have been disposed of or burned off

the first article also clearly states that only 1% of it is consumed by
cattle leaving 99% in the production of plant based foods so it would
appear that vegans and vegetarians are destroying and wasting the fresh
water supply with their precious plants

1300 gallons, because rice is grown under water... That same water stays with the plant for its life, until the paddy is drained.. Ever grow rice?

It was simple math to show a simple idea.. Sorry you didn't get it.

rice can be grown with wet feet or it can be grown as a grass, depends on
who's growing it and the method used, just like cranberries. either way it
requires fucktons of water. corn requires between 5000 to 9000 gallons per
acre per day averaged which brings us to the fact that rice actually requires
what other crops do

http://extension.umd.edu/publications/pdfs/fs447.pdf

and yes, there is incidental use such as cooling or fly control but you're
referring to a few hundred gallons of water per day for an entire herd,
that's included in the links that I'd posted and still maintains the usage
for cattle to around 1% of the total agricultural water usage

Just for clarification: I have nothing against people who eat meat. I sometimes eat meat myself. I think that eating meat is a perfectly sane and normal thing to do. Humans have eaten meat for ages. But if you get down to the facts, then a carnivorous diet is a lot less efficient in terms of production than a vegetarian one. And those are the hard FACTS, regardless of your personal choice, in which, I reiterate, I believe people should be free.

I know too. With corn and soy-based feed stock. The lion's share of the building elements of meat do not come from grass. They come from locally grown corn and from soy grown in South America. Not from grass - that's an almost negligible amount. The environmental costs of meat are only for a small part in the cattle itself. The real costs are in the supply chain. As long as Pris keeps blissfully ignoring that simple fact, he'll never be able to grasp what's going on.

Pris, I'm not arguing on the side of the vegans, but their argument in regard to environmental impact is sound.. The 'planet-Nebraska' analogy I used is the simplest way to represent this argument. (Koraks did it the hard way)

I don't feel like I should have to pull up the data to show a correlation that should be pretty strait-forward for a really intelligent person.. (Like you.)

But, since you absolutely need the data:

-"[cattle] consumed 100 kg of hay and 4 kg of grain per 1 kg of beef produced. Using the basic rule that it takes about 1,000 liters of water to produce 1 kg of hay and grain, thus about 100,000 liters were required to produce the 1 kg of beef."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_impact_of_meat_production

Remember, we're not talking about mom and dad's ten head of cattle they put out to pasture every spring.. We're talking about the cattle industry. I had already stated the free-range cattle industry thing.. We're talking apples and oranges here.

Also remember, I'm not a vegetarian.  I'm not saying we should all go vegan or anything to that effect.  I'm simply saying that there IS a huge environmental impact associated with beef production... I wish I could argue that, for the love of beef, but I can't!

and yes, there is incidental use such as cooling or fly control but you're
referring to a few hundred gallons of water per day for an entire herd,
that's included in the links that I'd posted and still maintains the usage
for cattle to around 1% of the total agricultural water usage

Yeah, dude.. I've already said this, but those figures DO NOT include the water that was used to grow the food for the cattle! You keep posting it, so read it!

Pris.. I know your background to some extent.. Please, do not tell me you think a field of alfalfa requires any less water than a field of wheat.. I KNOW you know better than that..

So.. you think that 1300 gallons of water is more wasteful than 100,000 liters?

Without using a link, tell me how you should approach that argument..
You cannot.  You just can't.

But I know you will.. So, before you decide you hate me, I think I'm done here. Just try to remember that I am not trying to 'team up' against you with the vegetarians.  I'm just saying, the argument they use in regard to environmental impact, is really quite sound.. I wish it wasn't but it is.

Now, if you'll remember, most of the argument against beef was in regard to 'ethics'..  In this regard, the vegi/vegan argument is tremendously weak..

Strike where the armor is weak.

I'll see you guys in a more light-hearted thread.
