Marriage is legal proof you aren't committed to the relationship. A licence is permission to engage in an action one would not otherwise be allowed to do. Submitting an application for a marriage licence is asking permission from a third party, when the third party has no authority to say "No". (At least not until it is created through transference by the act of asking...)
It wouldn't be bad if it were just Gods permission that was being asked, but people ask permission of the state...

Nonsense. After 15 years of relationship, my Lady's status as a "domestic partner" was going to cost me a lot of money to keep her on my medical insurance at work. In addition, I was married before and divorced. If I predecease my Lady, my social security money would default to my wicked ex-wife. I could not allow that to happen, so I married my Lady on 11/11/11 @ 11:11:11 AM EST. For many years I had given m'Lady Power of Attorney, and my Last Will and Testament leaves all my worldly goods, house, bank accounts, insurance, stock portfolio, cars, etc. to her. This I did to give her financial security and take all of the worry off the table. I have never cheated on her, and have been in a committed relationship. The marriage license is, as Icelander pointed out, the price of doing business. The relationship is psycho-spiritual-physical. The legality of state-sanctioned marriage is about dollars and cents in a society which is biased to this arrangement. Filing jointly on taxes will not help me, as far as I know. Hopefully, my ex-wife will predecease me, since I was married to her longer than her 2 husbands both before and after me, and the duration used to determine who receives social security when all have been divorced (though I'm not sure if this still applies).
