I'm Meeting a Truffle Expert - what questions do you have?
    #15376556 -

Hi guys,

I might have the opportunity to meet one of the leading truffle/mycorrhiza experts here in Australia, and I thought that it might be a good opportunity to ask some questions from the community. Here is one of his papers, he seems to have been in the game a while. http://www.jstor.org/pss/2432170

So do you guys have any questions you'd like answered? - I'll post the responses I'm given pending his approval.

Not to be a dick but this is a good opportunity. I'm going to be asking him about agar recipes, and the inoculation procedure he uses. These things are quite hard to find on the net.

i am curious too about whether it is possible to make truffle spawn, or should one just do liquid culture injection near the tree roots? I some friends who own a christmas tree farm that would were very interested in me helping them inoculate their farm. I was gonna try picking up some fresh specimens from the mountains here in the spring, but if i can't find anything you can pick some up here

Thank you for taking the time Feelers.

I will think about a useful question, but look forward to what
he has to add in any case.

Take care,

JD

Please ask him what advances have been made in artificially culturing truffles.  Have they made any progress toward growing them without the symbiotic relationship?  Im sure they have but its a huge industry and I bet its kept secret.

As a fellow Aussie i'm very excited to hear about you meeting this guy.  I wonder whether he's the mycologist who discovered the first truffle in the Amanita family.

I'd really lile you to ask him about whether trees need to be a certain age to start bearing truffles (might be more relevant for porcini).

Is it possible to treat an existing tree to attempt to remove other fungi and then introduce truffle spores?

Yes, how does he produce large volumes of inocullum?  How does he get it to the roots of the trees? At what age? In what soil? In what sized pots?

What's the best way to tell inoculation has been successful and to determine it's truffle mucelium, not some foreign unwanted fungi?

Ok i better take a breath and calm down!

Orchid seeds depend on mycorrhiza to grow in nature but in the lab we use knudson c agar to germinate and grow them for 6 months.

I used the same media on mushrooms and it worked like a dream.

5 day old portabella clone on right PDA, left two is orchid media.
Question is...
Can't we just soak sawdust or straw in this media to grow micorrhizal mushrooms? Or perhaps spray it daily.

does artificial fertilization affect mycorhization?

what are the best fungicides to use on the leaves when they get mildew?

is the optimmum pH 7.9 and what is the best calcium level?

what is the optimum Aus truffle tree planting density?

that's all that i cna think of for the moment, hope i'm not too late.

Was this thread just to come up with a bunch of truffle cultivation questions? I didn't learn anything here.

Anyone know more about the questions posted in this thread?

I'd be interested to know more about the relationship between truffle diversity and fungivory in animals?  For instance, in the Pacific Northwest USA truffle diversity is pretty darn high and you have a subspecies of the Northern Flying squirrel that feeds almost entirely on truffles and the occasional above ground fungi.  On the East coast in the central Appalachia's, we appear to have way less truffle diversity and the Northern Flying squirrel subspecies (Glaucomys sabrinus fuscus and coloratus) are, maybe, less dependent on truffles, but may supplement their diet with the occasional insect, staminate pollen tube, etc.  With Australia's incredible diversity of truffles, how many known obligate fungivores are there?  In the face of global warming and changing precipitation regimes, drought prone areas may be able to maintain truffle dependent species to a greater extent.

Great opportunity you have.
