a couple AR national forest hike pics
    #1521670 - 05/05/03 01:26 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

my camera's batteries didn't last too long so i only got a few pics from the beginning of the hike.

i didn't get to take a full pic of the waterfall, but this is the top 1/3 of it.
i was standing on a rock in the middle of the falls to get this pic.

i found some chocalate tube slime(Stemonitis splendens), crowded parchment (Stereum compicatum), chicken mushroom (Laetiporus sulphureus), but the only mushroom that got it's pic taken was unidentified. i see these around here (nw arkansas) all the time. they have a white spore print and a slick jelly like coating over the top of the cap.

I think Mr_Mushrooms has it.

The new name is Xerula furfuracea (for the most common species). It has been split into four species. To figure out which of the four you've got we need you to look at a couple features in detail.

Are the gills marginate? That is, look at them closely (with a magnifier if possible) and let us know if the edges of each gill are darker than the rest of the gill. If so, let us know what color the edges are.

Is there a distinctive odor to the mushroom? In this case you'd be looking for an odor similar to carrots or geraniums.

Is the portion of the stalk above ground rougened with grayish to brownish scales or fibers over a white background?

Let us know, and we can narrow it down exactly. BTW, all four species are considered edible (caps that is, the stems are tough), but not particularly worth going out of your way to hunt for eating.

Good job getting the rooting stem - those things break off pretty easily a lot of the time, and without knowing they have a rooting stem they're pretty hard to identify to genus.

Happy mushrooming!

i don't have a magnifying glass. i didn't notice any darkness at the edges yesterday. today, the edges are a little darker, but that looks be from aging and drying out.

there isn't much of a smell, but it does smell slightly like geraniums.

the base of the stem is rough and there are fiber running lengthwise, but they don't look darker than the stem.

thanks for the id. i'm going to try to get out in the woods again tomorrow. hopefully, i'll get more interesting pics.

Mr_Mushrooms, I got that from Dr Bessette (et al) book Mushrooms of Northeastern North America, which I still haven't finished reading. You really know you aren't big on the social scene when you actually read your mushroom books from cover to cover like a novel. It also says here that the genus Xerula is being studied for possible medicinal value because they contain chemicals which have antibiotic properties.

eric_the_red, your set of features matches to Xerula radicata.

Happy mushrooming!
