Through the magical forest... (7 pics)
    #945787 - 10/09/02 03:19 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Well today I decided on a whim to go mushroom hunting in the forest area around my house. These forests seem magical at day at night, although I haven't found a single active mushy yet (I must drive to GA and meet LK and go hunting with him hehe). I went specifically looking for Big Laughing Gyms because thats all that is active around here. Has anyone in GA/TN/NC found any yet? Found none, but I think these two top pics might be some types of gyms if anyone knows... They were both growing from the bottom of a rotted stump (different stumps though). Enjoy!

The above two are the ones that *might* be gyms...

The above looks like pancakes!

Well upload limit reached...will post a HUGE shroom's pic tomorrow!

Photos 1 & 2 I don't think offhand are Gymnopilus. Get a spore print and let us know what color it is.

Photos 3 and 4 are Amanitas. We need to see details of the base of the stem to have a chance at identifying them. If you're going to pick them, be sure you get the entire base of the stem - on many Amanitas it extends into the ground quite a ways like a taproot, so expect you might have to dig.

Photo 5 looks like old, faded Laetiporus suphureus specimens. By the time they are that faded I'd expect them to have gotten pretty tough and probably inedible.

Photo 6 I think are also Amanitas, but we need to see the underside to be sure.

Nice photos and interesting finds.

Happy mushrooming!

toxicman beat me to it.
damn thats a lot of laetiporous to go to waste!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
those are one of my favorites.
you should look for them there next year, and look around for them in the nearby area.
them are some damn fine eatin (the laetiporous, chicken of the woods)
the other photos i call em like toxicman does.
no guess on the first ones, except to say not gymnopilus.
the rest are amanita.
peace.
the white one looks deadly as hell, and the pancakes look grisette-ey

Hehe I'll look for those chicks of the woods tomorrow, time to find out how to cook them hehe. Hehe I knew some of these were deadly...but aren't they pretty hehe?

Also, I've found a TON of those on the bottom of the first pic. They are all growing on decaying wood. Anyone have an idea on an ID? Will get a spore print tomorrow.

And to anyone wondering about the ID of that blue-bruising shroom I found a while back, it was identified by two sources...one as psilocybe cubensis, the other as "unknown". There was bear shit in the area it was growing, so maybe a freak of nature occured?!?!? I still haven't found anymore of them, and I'm eager to actually find a magic shroom someday hehe
