Pcrn jars ready for casing?
    #1517754 - 05/03/03 04:46 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

My friends pcrn jars are almost 100%. The only spots that aren't fully colonized are the parts of the kernels that are against the glass, and its only about 1/3 of the total surface area. They've bee this way for about a week. Should he just case them like this?

Yeah, I'd go ahead and case them. In my experiences as of late with popcorn, i noticed that sometimes the popcorn at the bottom or the part of the kernals that are pressed against the glass won't always colonize. Good luck.

my friend has the same thing. he told me he thinks its because the popcorn is too wet. his took about 3 weeks to colonize which is WAY too long for popcorn. Next time he plans to dry them in a towel until they are completely dry.

I've only tried two strains on popcorn so far. Both were in pint jars and inoculated at the same time. One was Huatla and the other was Malabar. The Huatla colonized in 2 weeks, the Malabar took 3 weeks. My reasoning for this was for the spore count in the syringes. The Huatla was very dark and dense, while the Malabar syringe was very light because it was a free one.
