Progress from jars to casings *pics*
    #516131 -

A little trivia for you all. Can you tell the difference between mycellium and cobweb mold?

First one should be easy:

This is a different jar. This patch appears 'furry', and is larger than the other patches:

This is the 2nd jar at a different point. The flash has altered the colors a bit, but it is basically pure white:

Peace

anyway,
First two are mycelium, and the last pic is very over exposed so i can't really tell, but i'll say mycelium.

this no curosr thing is too tuff, i'm out

Thank you puscle and MeltingPenguin.

These jars were recovered after 2 weeks of no growth. Two jars were taken out of the batch and the vermiculite and substrate mix were separated. The very dry substrate cakes were broken up and put back into the jars, mixed with Spring water, and sealed with vermiculite. The pictures are the result of two days in the incubator.

Two other cakes had their verm layers removed and an equal amount of spring water added to the 1/2 pint mix, without removing or breaking apart the cake. These jars haven't shown any changes.

Thought this might be helpful to some people who are having difficulties getting off the ground.

Let me get this straight....lol
Your jars stalled....so you decided to use more water.
So you took the substant out....and added spring water?
I hope you didn't add more spores.
I hope you used a glove box.
Very interesting....lol

Don't mind me....i had a brain fart and thought i posted this in the wrong thread....lol
So i tryed to reword it like i had it....lolz
That means its past my bed time....g-nite

Quote "shake 'n bake and i helped. "

Please don't tell me you baked it.
That would have killed the spores.
Why i asked if you used a glove box?.....you took sterile material and opened it up to a room that probably has germs.
Anyway......I'd love to see how these jars turn out.
Let us know.....please.

no they weren't actually baked :) all the equipment was sterilized and a mask was used... any precautions that were within control were taken. it might not be a bad idea to build a glove box, esp if these ones become contam'd. i'll definitely keep you posted...

This is the jar I referred to as "Jar 2" in the
previous post.

"Jar 1" is also doing well...

Two others are colonizing. One other was
lost to something very nasty that smelled like
coffee grounds mixed with dogshit. Mmmm...
that's a smell I hope to never encounter again.

Can you please do us a favor....reduce the size of your pictures.
They are too big....if you need help doing this....I will be more than willing to help you.
PM me if you want help with photo's.

I'm very happy that you saved your jars though.

Roadkill

Sorry, thought it was small enough.. only 53k.. I'll reduce the
dimensions.

Basically, I knew that there was a risk involved, so I took the
precautions that I could. I didn't use the oven-tek but I did boil
the water and make sure appliances were sterile, and as
always wore a mask to not get any of the lovely organisms
living in my mouth over the cakes.

One cake was lost to something more disgusting than I've
ever seen. Another appears to possibly have cobweb, but
not sure. Considering the circumstances I think this is a
better than expected outcome. I'll keep you posted
throughout the life cycle.

Question.. I'm not sure what # of cakes will actually become
cakes that can be used in casing.. I might risk losing a good
cake to try an experiment, unless you know it's already
been done.. I thought I could take a cake and crumble it into a
jar with more substrate. The mycelium already has a
dominant presence, and could most likely keep control.. this
could quickly turn one jar into two.. biggest problem
would be trichoderma, which so far I haven't encountered. I
also learned this is exceptionally difficult to fight off once
encountered, since it uses the mycelium as a food source (a
very competetive edge). I'm also worried about pinning
before the new jars become fully colonized, the older mycelia
maturing before I'm ready.

Let me know your thoughts.

Never tried that.....anyone else?

Its just hard to see the picture.
Reduce the size of the picture itself.
Example....320 x 240....works great.
Can you take any clearer pictures ?
That one was fuzzy.

It looks to be whole grain rice, but the 'chicks say that it
is a premixed substrate. The bag was labeled Super
Substrate. I got a kit, but I think it was actually a decent
deal for the convenience (90 USD) and their shipping was
27 USD (included) so, I don't think it's that bad. :) Next
time the ingredients will be purchased separately.

The camera is an Olympus D-460.

I was going to take a picture before I put the casing material
on top of the mycelia chunks, but forgot... anyway, here is a

Forgot.. I was going to include this too. The cakes were
spongey, and smelled like dried mushrooms. The texture
was different from the loose slop that comes with contam'd
jars, very stiff.

Looking good man!!!
Yeah i can tell by the humidity on the sides of your chamber your in the high 90's
Probably 98 or 100% humidity.
Like you said....you better get the humidity down.

Nice casing. I'm impressed that you managed to get those stalled jars to work. I've had a few do that to me and could never get them to recover. I will be bolder next time and try breaking them up and adding water, thanks!

pic from this morning:

mycelia is continuing to spread but the pins that have been there for a few days don't seem to be taking off. i haven't been able to cut humidity, ive been fanning 5-7 times a day and stopped misting. the hygrometer is like that because the sensor is at the bottom which was laying right in the perlite.. the humidity is still over 95%.

i read Anno say to remove the saran wrap to cut humidity (?) will this casing be resistant enough to contams from doing that?

I was going to say just leave the lid slightly open to drop humidity and then i finished reading your post

" i read Anno say to remove the saran wrap to cut humidity (?) will this casing be resistant enough to contams from doing that? "
and do answer that. yes on both accounts (remove wrap and strong enough to resist contam unless you live in a land fill.)

is that perlite the casing is on?

i'm impressed you got the jars to recover too. just had the same problem with som stalled cakes and i tried everything but alas my efforts were in vain. i got the mycelium to recoverslightly but never produced any fruits.
nice job!
in answer to your question for future reference:
<"I thought I could take a cake and crumble it into a

sure you can do this! its called spawning.
keep us posted on your progress. i am interested to see what type of results you get.

I rather surprised that your casing sucked your humidity in the terrarium down to 50% when you removed the plastic wrap.

Re: Progress from jars to casings *pics* [Re: Roadkill]

Well, I unexpectedly had to go away for a little over a week and was very sad to leave the casing alone with no one to care for it. I came back and was surprised to have had no contams but a lot of abhorts and a very dry casing layer. It could have been promising, but I'm overjoyed to have gotten something out of what I thought was sure to have failed. I harvested these here.

I broke the surface up with a knife and put a thin layer of soil over the old casing. I rehydrated the soil and brought humidity back up to the upper 90's. Less than a day later I see some poking through. Wonder what will happen...

ok i know you had good luck with this.... but couldnt the same thing have been achieved by adding sterile water via syringe with oven tek and you would be really safe maybe im missing something about what you did, but that seems like it would be just as good and about 1 billion times more sterile considering theres always billions of things floating in the air

It probably wouldn't have made a difference, however I didn't
keep the syringes. I also noticed the jars that I didn't break
apart the substrate in were unsuccessful, in fact both were
contaminated worse than the any of others. I don't
understand this, but that's the way it happened.
