Another note on adding nutrients to jars...

I was just letting the group know the results of an experiment. My iguana was making his jars, and thought of a way to introduce more rice-nutrients without actually adding rice or BRF. He boiled a bag of rice with one gallon of water for 20 minutes, and "filtered" the rice sediment from the water. He continued to do that until he had about 5 gallons of nutrient water that wasn't "see-thru" (It was kind of thick with the nutrients). This was the ONLY water he used in his 1 part rice powder to 2 parts vermiculite compound. A dry verm layer was used on top in the jars. The colonization speed went from around 14 days to around 8 days (!!!) and the infection rate, well, it actually went down from last time but i think that is due to other factors. the only thing he noticed, alot of the larger grains of rice (he couldnt find BRF so he used a coffee grinder on long grain brown rice) appeared to have contam around it, but it was just the excess nutrient water mixing with the soft rice kernals. All in all, I think that this helped the growth process out. Maybe some more experimentation could be done to see? Next time I'm going to try it with a control group for better accuracy in judging the effect.

All of the infection I had was the exact same thing too, i'm going to try soaking both grains for 23 hours before I use them next tiem.

I don't know if it works or helps or whatever, but I use aquarium water for my jars... But I have ugly toes. :smile:
