log culture- initiating primordia by dunking
    #15050570 -

I have been working with shiitake log culture for the past
few years, mainly using Fungi Perfecti's shiitake dowels.
Recently I've diversified and am incubating numerous logs
of Elm Oyster/Phoenix Oyster/Lion's mane/chicken of the woods and a few other less well known species...

To initiate fruiting out of season with the shiitake logs we would submerge them in cold water for 24-48 hours and then stack them vertically in a shady spot, keep them moist by watering them, and then the primordia would sprout from the logs about a week later.
We could initiate fruiting's pretty much whenever we wanted a crop of shiitakes!

I assume that this initiation strategy works equally as well with other mushroom species but thought it would be good to get opinions.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
OmSource

Most people here make edibles using sawdust/straw in a plastic log.  My hats off to anyone that can wait as long as it takes to do it using dowels in a real log.  But, yes, I've read that any edible will work as you described, by dunking in cold water for a day or two.  The same is true making sawdust logs... they have to be good and hydrated to grow mushrooms.  After growing, I'll wait a week or two, dunk for a day, and then that'll trigger another growth.

I have a feeling that your Laetiporus logs will need to be partially buried

I have shiitake...lions mane ...piopinni...king oyster...blue oyster...and regular oyster logs outside ...and mostly growing on Oak, except the oysters are on maple and mulberry (some shiitake on maple also)

the lions mane and shiitake both fruit when soaked.....and the oysters will also....but the other strains I have need to colonize another year before I know what they will do

I have no idea what I'm doing

Good stuff, thanks for the input!
There's tons of literature on shiitakes on logs, but not much on other edibles/medicinals.
I'm quite into the logs as you can fruit them for years and years...true the B.E. isnt anywhere near as high as a sawdust block, but I like the set and forget method that works well with log culture!

Momofo, how are the king oysters going on the logs?I've never tried them but have always been keen!
Post some pics if you have the time

It will be another season before my Kings and Piopinni's are ready to fruit...
and as you stated....there aint much info on " other" outdoor log cultivation ...
(so I will be flying blind when they do)

We just turn the sprinklers on a few times a day to wet them up very good. They start fruiting soon thereafter.

good info lipa,
that seems to work well for most species, and at different times of the year?
Or only during their fruiting temps?
