The best source for spores and cultures
    #3004446 - 08/14/04 03:35 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Hello everyone  :nut:

We are going to be setting up a Gourmet Mushroom house and lab in the next couple weeks. No Illeagl shrooms only the food freindly kind
Where we live there are alot of high end resturants. My wife works as a chef in one of the top eateries. After talking with the head chef and doing alot of market research in the area we decided there would be a very good chance of having a succesful business in gourmet shrooms. The nearest cultivator is 250 miles away and only grows button and portabellas.

Anyway the question is .... Where is the best deals for culteres and prints. After checking a handful of sites I was shocked to learn that culteres can be very expensive. Fugi perficti wants 125 bucks per culture!!

Being that we are planning on spending 2500 bucks on the new lab and grow house. Which may seem like alot. It ain't!! :frown:

SO I don't really have 500 bucks to buy the cultures we want ( Oysters ,portabellas, buttons, chanteralls, enkoi ). I don't really mind starting from spores. Shit we very well might just do that. But the time spent isolating strains would be better spent getting a faster return on the investment. We ain't got alot of cash and with 6 mouths to feed, every penny saved....... well you know!

Any help with info would be very much accepted. We would ask the karma gods to bless you. :eyemouth:

Besides trading, sporeworks are the cheapest cultures you'll find. Culture libraries will want as much if not more than Fungi Perfecti. I have heard nothing bad about sporeworks cultures. They spend considerable time and money researching and developing the cultures that they sell. R&D is something you will have to do before going commercial.

You'll want to "get to know" your strains before thinking about commercial cultivation or it will be a very rough start to commercial production. Getting 200lbs of substrate mass to flush out all at the same time can be a trick sometimes. That is why you need to have developed a proper primordia initiation strategy first.

As a small scale cultivator, oysters are your best shot. I wouldn't worry about anything else until you start to expand. The market for button mushrooms is packed solid. Wholesale price of the button mushroom is nearly half that of oyster mushrooms. The yield of oysters on straw is unmatched and the cost is the least of all edible mushrooms. Most gourmet chefs will drop their jaws when you show them a box of fresh oyster mushrooms. If you want to research alternatives to the tradition oyster mushroom , I suggest you look into H. Ulmarius as another promising commercial species. Also, P. Eryngii.

Thanks for your helpful info. I will use it.

We had diccussed Farming Oysters first, not only because of the ease of starting there but also, most of the chefs we have talked with, at this point, all ask about Oysters in the first couple of questions

THANKS AGIAN
