after i innoculate i cover the lids with seran wrap which i think prevents most types of contamination and gives proper air exchange.

What is the big problem with tapping the holes. That is what PF says to do and I think they would have tried it out to see if there are major problems with it.

it's not that there's a big problem with taping them. it's just that some people notice a slowing of mycelium growth towards the end, and it has helped to untape the holes and allow oxygen in. i haven't had this problem yet, but i don't tape the holes anymore. i see no point.and remember, just because PF says do it this way, that doesn't mean it's the best way. you can always improve upon a tek. that doesn't mean the PF tek doesn't work, i think newbies should follow it to the letter. there's just always something better.
