im aware that the vast majority of people {trippers included} believe castenada to be a fake/fraud/charlatan.
i for one dont believe this is the case...
here are some reasons why , castenada himself said something to the effect of ,, "lie" to others about what it is you do , keep others guessing about who you are and what it is you do , do this so often that you yourself are no longer sure what it is you do or are.
is it not possible that castenada was merely fucking with the audience like a psychedelic drug can fuck with you and give you great truths mixed with great delusions?
i believe castenada was about 90% truth mixed with 10% {possibly} deliberate exxagerations , lies in order to test , create doubts for his readers.
those who think its all fantasy only have to read the books to know his descriptions of various drug states are too on the money to be false.
thoughts or some of castenadas more important qoutes please...

I've stayed away from his books due to the reputation... do you have a recommendation or two of what I SHOULD read to get a good feeling for his 'on the money' descriptions.  I'm mainly experienced in shrooms,DMT, LSA, and weed so something along those lines?

Think it's been shown that he made it all up... None of it happened..'fantasy'
If you read it, you will see it's not accurate... not even good descriptions of trips..

believe what you want... But if a liar says 'I am not a liar', do you believe them?

I don't choose to believe or to not believe in what Castenada wrote. Rather I choose to acknowledge that what he wrote is possible.

I think anyone who truly explores the psychedelic world have experiences that others will doubt. Some of my own trip reports really push the boundaries of reality.

i have only read "the teachings of don juan" so far which helped me through an extremely difficult aftermath of having three of the worst shroom trips of all time {in a row}.
that book gave me the motivation and courage to return to altered states again.

Aside from being a little more than outlandish, the book did have some interesting parts...or...like five or six large paragraphs that actually made sense.


I do like the part about being on a path with heart, though. (from the first book)

Here is a documentary that I watched a while back about Casteneda.


I was aware of the controversy surrounding the factualness of his books, but was basically of the opinion that "Truth" doesn't need to be synonymous with "Fact" and that his books could be a helpful guide for spiritual seekers...

however, after watching this documentary, I was shocked and horrified at how completely deceptive, manipulative, and harmful Carlos was as a person, and how he was able to take such a beautiful spirituality and use it to exploit people.

Just your basic, run of the mill cult leader really.

seriously, watch that documentary. It doesn't get into the cult stuff until the last half, but the whole thing is mind blowing.

Fuck Castaneda! Dude destroyed lives and families...

Sad story, funny note; a friend of mine tried to get me into his books a long time ago, before I tripped at all and I finally read the first one, years later, and am like "No wonder he refuses to trip with me."

lol, he probably thinks I'm spending all this time dancing around with a bug eyed Mescalito or turning into a damn crow.
