Better Living Through Chemistry: the documentary * 3
    #14209932 - 03/30/11 02:39 PM (13 years, 2 days ago)

Wow, did anyone else here know that the writer and producer of "Hofmann's Potion", Connie Littlefield, is making a new documentary about the history of LSD chemistry titled "Better Living Through Chemistry"?  I did a search on it here and didn't find anything, so I think I'm safe.  Anyway, she made a page on kickstarter.com, which is a website where you can raise funds for your movie.  Well she reached her goal of $15,000 from 25 backers, and is now making the film.  As you can see in the trailer, it will feature lots of Nick Sand!  And from the description, it sounds like Tim Scully will also be featured in it!  I am very, very excited about this.  Check it out..........

Better Living Through Chemistry: the documentary

Project by Connie Littlefield

About this project

Conceptafilm is making a feature length documentary called "Better Living Through Chemistry." This film will tell the story of underground psychedelic chemistry: the people who made the drugs; their adventures evading the law; and society’s mixed emotions about the experiences they produced.

Beginning with the prohibition against LSD in 1966 and lasting until Sand’s final capture in 1996, a large amount of the underground LSD available in North America was made by

Nicholas Sand: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Sand and Tim Scully: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Scully , initially in partnership with Owsley Stanley: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Owsley_Stanley .

This film tells the story of ‘Orange Sunshine,’ 'White Lightening,' 'Purple Monterey' and other incarnations of LSD. Sand & Scully made the finest, purest LSD ever created, & evaded the law for a really long time.

We will hear from the chemists themselves; their kids, wives and ex-wives; business associates; friends; former friends; psychedelic groupies; narcotics agents; and the judge who was called out of retirement to convict Nick for a second time.

The DEA wanted to make an example of them, so the court gave Nick 15 years and Tim 20. Tim sold his company to its employees, tried to console his widowed mother, and went to prison. Nick jumped bail and headed to Canada, where he continued making psychedelics for another 20 years.

Our subjects were not in it for the money: they were on a mission from God (most of the time). This film relates the true legacy of the 1960s: the drug war, the psychedelic vision, and humanity’s ongoing struggle to value love over money.

Sand and Scully have taken a completely candid approach to this film and granted Conceptafilm the exclusive right to tell this story. Because of their support, many doors have opened: archival materials - documents, photos, and old home movies - have arrived on our doorstep. Secondary subjects are stepping up to have their say.

We met Nick &Tim a few years ago, while researching the earlier film, "Hofmann's Potion:" http://www.nfb.ca/film/hofmanns_potion . In some ways, this project is a continuation of that story - although very different stylistically.

We are currently raising development money for what will be a feature-length documentary. With the funds we raise through Kickstarter, we will shoot & edit a short demo, and write a treatment for the film. A budget and marketing plan will complete the development package. With these tools, we will have no trouble finding completion financing.

Project location: Halifax, Canada

I'm glad this was backed so fervently. It's shaping up to be a solid documentary!

Also, Mr. Sand was quite the looker back in his prime, hehe

Glad you guys are as excited as I am.  Tie, I doubt if this documentary has anything to do with Nick and Tim's books, but I hope they come out soon as well.

PS - I found two other new psychedelic documentary projects that may never be made.  The first is also on kickstarter.  I think this one may have been discussed on The Shroomery before.  It's called Orange Sunshine: A documentary portrait of the last days of the endless summer.  It's about the Brotherhood Of Eternal Love.  I found this one when looking through the list of backers for "Better Living...." and saw Tim Scully's name.  He backed both films.  Unfortunately, the funding was unsuccessful.  They only raised $7,000 out of the $30,000 goal.  Boo.

The second that I found is from a site very similar to kickstarter called indiegogo. It's called From Neurons to Nirvana by the producer of the Aldous Huxley documentary "The Gravity Of Light".  This one has a more reasonable goal of $8,000, but has only raised $540 with only 17 days left.  Boo.

Ahahah where were you last week when I desperatly tried to convince people to donate

Too bad, I was pretty sure you would back this project up.

The kickstarter thing might be over, but the production might accept direct donations

Anyway, hope it turns well, can't wait to see it…

Shit.  I did a search for the exact term "better living through chemistry" and found nothing.  I just searched the subject only because it's a fairly common term and I assumed that if someone made a thread about the documentary, the name would be in the subject.  But anyway, great job to you guys who donated and got the word out.  Thanks a lot!

Yeah, it's in the works.  I can not wait.  She has a Facebook page for the movie now where I guess she's going to post occasional updates about production.  Check it out.

NEAT!!!!!!!!!  Please keep us updated and informed.  Definitely want to see these folks on film and hear their first-hand accounts.  I definitely took some of their acid back in the day (1970, 1971), so my interest is high. (LOL).

Excellent!  Love the glimpses of his lab and equipment.  There's some serious money tied up in that glassware.  I also saw a very old-style vacuum pump.

Nick expresses himself and captures the moment in time and political climate pretty much as I remember it.

Over 12-1/2 YEARS later, this documentary is finally out! I saw you can rent it on Amazon Prime. I think you can download or own in from iTunes maybe. There are other places also. But anyway, I really need to remember to buy it or rent it. Hopefully this thread will serve as a reminder.

I bought the movie on Google and was able to watch it through my YouTube. I highly recommend it if you're at all interested in Sasha and Ann Shulgin. I wish it had gone on for another 5 hours.
