Tray of aborts

Here's the result of a multispore grain inoculation. It's assumed that the resultant mycelium was no good for this type of thing.
 Edit: aborts not abhorts

IME aborts are primarily caused by insufficient air exchange.

Nice picture. In the now immortal words of Anno - it's 'Aborts' not 'Abhorts'. Not to flame.
Multi spore innoculations are fine. Try it again. It is not uncommon for multi spore innoculations to have a more than normal fuzzy appearance. This grain does not colonize completely and is weak as the strains compete with each other. After casing it is more susceptible to trich. This tray is contamed. The grain has not fully colonized properly. Excessive heat will also do this. If it colonizes slow and needs more than three weeks to finish it is also susceptible to contams. Wet grains or blotch will also appear. If the grain has a slightly more gray look to it when casing, it may also contam easier. If the grains break apart very easy and there is no chunkiness to it, it has not colonized properly. Less humidity and watering will help these trays while waiting for pins. Excessive watering and humidity for trays not colonized properly aids the contams. By looking at the aborts it appears there has been excessive humidity for this tray. Make tea with the aborts. Line your trays with tinfoil, they'll help when your casing shrinks and also makes the trays reusable and easier to clean. Just my foaf turtles opinion.

What strains did you innoculate? What is the advantage of multispore innoculation. I've thought about trying it, but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

lol I was just about to say that poke smot... just out of curiousity.. what exactly is your humidification method? Come to think of it I have three full trays of abort here myself from a multi spore inoculation. But I dont think that was the problem

The Hooligans had a bunch of aborts also. They narrowed it down to air exchange per hour. They thought that their bubbler stone would supply enough O2 but thet were WRONG! Fanning the terrarium 2 to 3 times per hour while maintaining a RH of 90-95 percent fixed the problem.
Still have aborts every, now-and-again but they are few, and far between.

this has happened to some i know. try adding a thin (and i mean just so the mycelium is covered, but so it gets light) and initiate pinning again.

hey smot: i am interested in automation, programming and hardware device comtrol [though not extremely knowledgable]. would you be willing to give some details on your system?

Interesting. I too would be interested in some details. More so on the software side and how you feed the data. Is it an easy program to create? Would you be willing to share it?
Thanks for the info.

Very interesting. Looks much more complicated than I initially thought, but hopefully I will get a chance to thoroughly look it over.

cool, thanx smot. i had no idea ther was an automation section in the FAQ.
gotta love anyone who says "uberlicious"...
i plan on building a box of my own, though just for my own use, and likely to have a "brass tacks" controll interface: though i'd like to play around with SCSI and have the whole thing controlled via a custom WIN32_ASPI standard device driver in the long run. this will probably be apended to my "shit i'll never get done" list: but what the hey right?
