Need opinion on automated air exchange

Greetings. I want to get some feedback on tub setup of mine before I persue it further. Two medium sized rubbermaid containers w/ castings & straw subtrate. To push the envelope, both are cased with coir. The tubs after colonized w/ thai KS will be placed in a larger (around 4 by 3 ft) bin. A tray of wet perlite in a tray will be between the two subtrate tubs. A modified hepa filter with hose will be connected to a pvc pipe in the large holding tub that extends the length of the tub. The pipe has .5 in drilled holes in it and is placed along the long side of the tub toward the top. The holes face the two containers w/ subsrate. Two 4 by 4 in exhaust vents are cut above the two conatainers on the opposite side of the holding bin and coverd with filters. The air will circulate 8-15 min every two hours. for max air exchange. My problem: Wil the increased air exchange dry the coir. Anyone have exp. w/ this much air exchange. Laterz

it depends by the volume of water contained in the perlite tray. An also depend by ratio:Lt/h. that exchange four pumps. Usually during the pumpimg action umidity drops from 98 to 80/68% and gradually rebuilt in the next 1/2 hour.So if Hum. it is critical it is better that the air from the pumps pass before in a gorogliator or a humid chamber. It is a little triky but sometime could be usefull. To reduce the air pump funcioning time you can put a little protected tray conteinig lye that absorb C02 transforming it in sodium bicarbonate oxigen and water, it adsorb also a little of hum. but it is a very little thing compared to dropping caused by ventilation. If you will use this trick you will notice that the biggest mush and the earlier pinnings it will occure in the nearest lye's tray where oxigen are much more.

Thanks for the insight. But a gurgalor is too much hassle for the project. Concerning the drop in humidity, if a cool mist is used without perlite, I may or most likely may be hitting the high 90's which may leave me with too much condensation...Any other suggestions? I'm pushing for the bulk, but don't have time for the fanning. And air exchange is a requirement for me... And the air supply is not air pumps, but actually a holmes home air purifier(for a large room) that is taped up to a tube that goes to etc, etc, etc...

Well, in my experience with perlitehumiteck the drop of humidity it is not fatal. Talking about casing if you calculate the average hum. considering the max and the min. you will obtain a perfect 86/90% . Try to use the lye: Sodium hydroxide it will improve the oxigen ratio enormously! It is alslo completly harmless to mush and to you. Lye limited its action in axorbing all the co2. It is the same teck used by NASA to purify the air on shuttle. About the the condensation: if you use 4lt. of water in the perlite you will obtain a perfect env. for cakes 2,5liter a perfect env. for casing with Cubensis 2lt good for Pan. To limit the contamination add 1-1/2-1/4 of H202 3% ( 200ml bottle) to the perlite and you will not need any epa or similar.Guaranteed. I' have seen contamination always in cakes or jar during colonization so the sterility of the incubation chamber is much more important than the terrarium one!

Be careful with sodium hydroxide, it is very caustic and will cause severe chemical burns if you get it on your skin.

Why don't you just make some tubbing underneath the perlite ?
I use 2" of perlite and allways a H202/H20 mixture hitting 1" of perlite, then the tube is always submerged and end into a airstone wich also gets submerged, 85-95 Rh are achieved easeally with pump on.
I don't grow bulk and i know in your situation perhaps other solution could be better. Anyway, if the space is too large you can punch some holes allong the tubbing and close the ending hole of the tube, giving you a better air distribution, airstone wouldn't be needed then.

Do not need to touch it. I do this way: without opening the can of lye I drill some hole on the lid of it then put some sort of plastic cap with a long screw in it. Put the can inside the terrarium ( if you have a big one maybe need 1 every m2) et voil?: 1 can of 250gr will last two/three months.I Had never get burned even non wearing plastic glove...Well I like very much chemical prod. I know I'am a little crazy...
