Possibilianism
    #14831257 -

Do you think that Possibilianism amounts to anything other than plain old agnosticism?

Possibilians take the possibilities to be primary. All possibilities are valid.

An Agnostic atheist can be considered as someone who believes there is no way to tell, but thinks that it is not worth considering any theistic views.

An Atheist Possibilian would be a person who thinks that there is some sort of reasoning that makes theism impossible.

The opposite to a Possibilian would be someone who commits to a believing or considering only a single possiblity.

An Atheist Possibilian seems to be an oxymoron. For the most part it does sound identical to normal agnosticism.

David Eagleman coined the term "possibilian" to describe himself precisely because he felt the word "agnostic" was too passive.  The difference between a possibilian and an agnostic is that where an agnostic simply throws their hands up and says "I don't know" or "There's no way I can know," the possibilian says "Well yeah, but what about this?"  The possibilian actively seeks to explore the different possibilities out there beyond what is currently testable.  Eagleman exemplifies this in his book Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives, in which he imagines several different afterlife scenarios.

Seems an admission of defeat.  I don't know anything's possible that is.  First of all I don't know is a fact so why even say it.  It's like saying "OK you arrogant fairy tale telling religious idiot you were right".  Right about the first part but not right.

Or something like that.  It's a fact.  All possibilities are possible.  To cow tow to some fairy tale fiction like your fiction is really fiction seems retarded.

Seems like a fairly worthless term. Why do people without a religion feel the need to invent a new word to classify themselves?

Its more of a philosophical stance - to hold possibilities as primary.

Im not entirely sure what you mean. But I would agree that the arrogant fairy tale telling person might be right about plenty of things. I do not treat the 6000 year ago creation with much seriousness because it would imply that some hoax was being played, in order for fossil evidence to be accounted for. This hoax is in contradiction to the teachings of the people that believe in this story. That adds more weight against the whole argument. Of course, it is possible that there is a great deception being played on humans. It would seem, however, that we have no way of knowing. It doesnt really affect our lives. It does make us wonder about the purpose of life, but that question is just as strong whether the world came into existance billions, or thousands, of years ago.

Yes I know what Eagleman thinks but I wanted to ask people here.

To me the name change is an act to make agnosticism more appealing by using a new word and a new way of thinking about the word.

Not quite. Although I have not heard anyone give disproof of Theism, it might be possible. If someone held this, they would become Atheist because theism would be shown to be impossible.
