I frequently talk about how screaming absolutely ruins any song it is in, and how I cannot listen to more than 15 seconds of a screamer without turning off the song.

THIS is my kind of thread:snoop:

I'm a long-time extreme metalhead so of course distorted extreme vocals (ranging from black metal shrieks to death metal growls and the even lower goregrind gurgling) are my forte`, and I love them to death.

The reason they are there, is because the vocals fit the music. The vocals are as much an instrument as the guitars and drums and contribute greatly to the atmosphere. You cannot have someone singing like Justin Beiber over Cannibal Corpse, can you? No. If "not understanding what they are saying" is an issue, go look up the lyrics. Distorted vocals convey the sheer intensity of emotions which the vocalist attempts to express. My favorite vocalists are far too many as I know close to 1,000+ Black/Death/Doom Metal bands but I'd have to say my top favorite would have to be

Mikko Aspa from Deathspell Omega (Avant-garde/Experimental/Neo-classical Black Metal)
Renato Gallina from diSEMBOWELMENT (Death/Doom Metal)
Hoest from Taake (Melodic Black Metal)
Vindsval from Blut Aus Nord ("Metaphysical" Black Metal)
Valfar from Windir (Black/Viking/Folk Metal)
Janos from (V.E.G.A.) ("Schizophrenic" Black Metal :lol:)
Luc Lemay from Gorguts (Technical/Avant-Garde Death Metal)

are my favorite extreme vocalists.
