Overcoming myself
    #14314292 -

I'm very new here but this spring I began taking a philosophy class and some debates in there have gotten heated, to say the least. Most people in the class are  your stereotypical new age stoners (myself included), so we share many of the same beliefs. However, one issue we stand divided on is the inability to overcome your own inhibitors. An example: confirmation bias. I believe that, through self discipline and logical thinking, one can overcome the obstacle of faith. Faith is the denial of observation to preserve a belief; known scientifically as confirmation bias. I'm no atheist, but I do accept the fact that no one knows what happens when you die, therefore people are scared into believing ridiculous stories told by idiots. I'm not here to bash religion, but it's the simple truth.
Which is why it drives me crazy when logical, intelligent people will treat their entire lives with an observational approach, then throw it all aside when it comes to their ability to question "spiritual" and political leaders. Do we forget that we are the majority and have the ability to speak up?

What do you think about the ability to overcome your own inhibitors, such as susceptibility and confirmation bias?

I think you'll be a great addition here.

Faith is needed imo when facing the dark unknown, but I can't for the life of me understand why some of my most intelligent friends believe that Jesus had powers as if he was some fucking one dimensional superhero. The burden of proof is on their asses and they fail to substantiate jack.

Agreed to a certain extent.

I believe in religion but also reality when I meet people who talk constantly about god.

My mind tends to leave the premises.

Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of religious friends. I don't hate them for it.

Good question, its good to see people thinking like this. i think its totally possible but in the process you'll find a lot of the things you think you believed were just things which havent been re examined in the light of your present faculties.

"are you telling me i am mistaken?

No, and I don't know if there is a difference. You said what you said, it has nothing to do with your character. You could tell me 1+1=3 and you wouldn't be wrong, you would just have to be able to tell why it was that 1+1=3, or that it was a joke or that you mislearned it and thats what you thought it was, or by "3" you mean "2" or any other way that you could have possibly come to state "1+1=3". You wouldn't be wrong, you would be what you would be, which is someone who thinks what you think, or don't. Personally, I try not to hold on to much in terms of believing in one thing or another, I've lost a lot of "muscle" in that area, and it can be difficult for me to hold beliefs to some extent. If you work those muscles out a lot though, it gets pretty easy. Scary easy. Like installing a switch in your mind that anything or anyone can trigger, "pushing your buttons" so they say. Personally, I have no buttons. I do get pissed off, but really if I sat down and thought about it, I would never get pissed off. Why? Because there is absolutely nothing being angry can do, there is no justified reason for it, it helps nothing, it is putting oneself in a personal hell. I try to be happy or at least content all the time. My worst trouble is feeling too good, and standing out from the crowd for refusing to become angry about things that "everyone" gets angry about. The most I do is joke anymore, or I try. There's a lot of fucking bullshit in this world, and a whole lot of people selling it. I try my best to drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet, without too much sugar or meat, it makes me feel better, less indigestion and less general sagging through the day, oh and its cheaper. I'm sorry for going on like this, please forgive me.

Nah, I wouldn't do that. If you ever don't understand me feel free to ask about what it is you don't understand and I will be happy to explain, or, if your questions are good enough, retract what I said.

If I ever seem to misunderstand you, feel free to tell me to fuck off. I'll know that it is your way of letting me know you don't understand.

Obviously I'm sort of playing devil's advocate, but one could argue that holding to any belief requires faith.

Quote:
Those who claim for themselves to judge the truth are bound to possess a criterion of truth. This criterion, then, either is without a judge's approval or has been approved. But if it is without approval, whence comes it that it is truthworthy? For no matter of dispute is to be trusted without judging. And, if it has been approved, that which approves it, in turn, either has been approved or has not been approved, and so on ad infinitum.
