A felon accused of impersonating a Los Angeles County firefighter paramedic during major disasters has been charged with two felony counts of possessing a firearm and a misdemeanor of impersonating fire personnel, officials said.
If convicted faces a maximum sentence of three years and eight months in prison.
The Orange County District Attorney's Office arrested Campbell on Sept. 7 after serving a search warrant on his Huntington Beach home following a two-month investigation. Investigators found a handgun, shotgun and stolen Los Angeles County Fire Department equipment, officials said.
Campbell was charged with the counts Friday. He is out on $20,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 19.
Officials say Campbell falsely represented himself as an L.A. County paramedic at the World Trade Center after Sept. 11, 2001 and Hurricane Katrina.
He also gained front-line access to the Sawtooth and Esperanza fires in San Bernardino and Riverside counties, officials said. He is also accused of shooting video footage at the Esperanza fire, which claimed the lives of five firefighters.
Campbell owns an Anaheim business, Frontline Safety Produces, which sells fire safety equipment over the Internet and offers CPR training. Under the pretense of being a firefighter, he sought jobs teaching CPR to local government agencies and private industries, officials said.
Officials say he posed as a Los Angeles Fire Department paramedic captain who flew helicopters for the department. He obtained a uniform with Los Angeles patches and a badge and carried firefighter identification, officials said.
Campbell has a felony conviction in Arizona related to burglaries and the fraudulent misuse of credit cards. He was working in Arizona as an emergency medical technician for a local ambulance company when his paramedic license was revoked based on his felony convictions.
Campbell is also accused of carrying a firearm, which is a crime because of his felony convictions.
