What happens to a car if you stall the manual transmission too much?

I was trying to teach my girlfriend to drive stick today.

She stalled out the car a bunch at a stop sign and the check engine light came on.  There was a funky smell when we got out of the car.

What gives?

Heating up the clutch plate probably.  Does it slip?

I would guess its more a function of gassing it with the clutch still depressed some rather than stalling.

i bet if you reset the ecu the light will turn off..  the smell was probably the clutch..  smells kinda like funky plastic or new brakes..  id check the code by searching how on your car using google..  if its obd2 youll need a code reader which autozone can lend you..  reset it and if it comes back then address the issue..  you can usually reset it by unhooking the battery and hitting the horn or brakes and let it sit for a min..  then hook it back up..  what kinda car is it?  im a honda/vw expert..  and i know many other cars as well..  lemme know if you need help!

It's a truck, Ford Ranger 99.

I figured the smell was just the clutch getting too hot.  I'll try the battery trick, thanks!

hope it works out for ya..  if it doesnt then check the code with a reader at autozone..  they will usually check it for you for free actually..  (they can sell you parts)  if they give you a code make sure to take note of the code number and description..  if you need any more help let us know..  ill check this thread for ya... good luck!:thumbup:

That did the trick!  Light is off!

Thanks for the tip!  I'll have to remember that.

Glad I didn't take it to one of the swindlers around town.  I'd have probably ended up with a couple hundred dollar bill for nothing.

mostly newer vdubs..  jettas bugs..  im not too hands on experienced with older vw cars but i know alot about them in general..  whats up?

I somewhat recently inherited an 80 volkswagen vanagon beautiful condition legit 30,000 mile car. mostly just plastic rotting issues. but the one thing that really pisses me off is that the steering wheel needs to be an eighth of a turn left to drive straight and it's only a somewhat recent problem since i got it and drove up from southern california..

dunno i just get a bit curious when i hear VW :laugh:

sounds like an alignment ish..  if its pulling to one side or the wheel is misaligned its probably because of a bent tie rod or a old rubber control arm bushing going bad..  if the steering wheel jiggles or the front wheel (or wheels) move and make noise squeeking or whatnot when its in reverse and you are pumping the brakes its the controll arm bushings..  which need to be pressed usually..  if the steering wheel is just a bit off but it drives fine you can disconnect the rod from the steering box and move it over a couple teeth and it will correct it but usually indicates a bent steering tie rod..  but usually its best to have an alignment on the older cars to get em up to perfect again and shouldnt cost more than 75 bux usually..  and its a good investment as you will save money on tires and know any issues..  its really worth it and good peace of mind..

Haha, had my girlie learn on my Saab.

A few times the battery actually ran itself dry from stalling so many times.  However, I've never had any clutch problems due to her 1,000,000+ stallouts.  :lol:

After a while you get really good at starting it back up.
Some sticks are easier to drive than others.
