Diesel cars and your opinion.
    #5456885 - 03/29/06 08:10 PM (18 years, 3 days ago)

I just got my second diesel -

Had a 1999 VW TDI Jetta tis ok.

Now I have 1996 Dodge 350 Cummins this thing rocks socks.  I drive it in the mountains pretty hard and get 600 miles out of a 30 gallon tank (20 mpg for you geniuses).  Nice powerful truck.  Who wants 10,000 lbs of horse poo delivered?  I can do it got a nice gooseneck dump trailer.

I just want to hear some general discussion as to what everyone thinks about diesels.

I am thinking about selling my Honda for a diesel car now too.

Any good/bad diesel experiences I would like to hear about too.

I have found diesel to have a higher overall startup cost but makeup for itself in maintnance and fuel economy.

Looking forward to your responses.

I'll be getting a diesel as soon as I can get rid of my POS I have now. Then converting to run on veggie oil as well as diesel.

I had a 1978 mercedes benz 300 turbo, nice car... tranny went out after i had it for 8k miles... at 233,000 on the odomiter, engine Still running well.

i just bought a diesel box truck that im converting to an rv. awesome car.
just drove it to florida and back this weekend, great for long hauls.
thing is diesel engines have smaller ranges for peak rpm's

for the engine i have now, a detroit diesel 6.2 lieter v8. for every 10 miles per hour above the peak rpm, i loose 3 mpg, where a gas engine would loose 1.5 or 2 mpg...
regardless, the longevity of the engines outlasts anything.

Also, we have to consider long term gasoline dependency. diesel engines can run on waste vegitable oil alone, or waste vegitable oil converted into bio-diesel.

if shit ever heats up in the middle east, and gas isnt avaliable, you can still drive on veg oil, or make your own bio-d very simply... they can run on almost anything.... hell i know a guy that ran out of diesel and poured old motor oil into the gas tank, and it got him home!

over all, diesel's
have longer lasting engines,
can run on a variety of fuels, that can be produced yourself
and in illinois, a diesel NEVEVER has to pass emmissions.

++++ diesel over gas.

Shooting for a VW Jetta or Golf TDI, preferably newer body style but I'll take an older one if the price is right. One of my brothers plans on getting a diesel to run it on biodiesel, as well as using the bio to heat his home or something.

just to let you konw that VW only approves a 5% blend of bio-d or you will void your warranty.

svo is also a warranty voider, so get an older car, just out out of warranty....

also there is a clean diesel tax credit out there avaliable... its pretty big. im not sure if it is a state by state thing, or national...

www.greasecar.com  <------- im getting a kit from there some time this week.

good deal

and yes you can also use bio-d to heat your home, and also run it in diesel generators.

Hm, thanks for the warranty info. Didn't know that shit. Looks like I'll be getting an older VW then!

I plan on getting the 12 gallon kit from greasel.com.

nice,
sounds like a good deal
if youre just statrting out, i would say get an older mercedes turbo diesel, good for starting out and you can get it for under a grand.
theres some 3 milion in the usa, so getting parts isnt that hard. my fav junk yard has about 3 of them .

Thanks for the advice. I'm kinda set on the Vdub, but I'll check out the Mercedes. I'm gonna be taking a few courses on diesel technology at my local community college in the fall so I can actually know shit about my car and fix stuff when it goes wrong.

zippoz - Good luck on your conversion I read your post about it the other day. My buddy just picked a 6.2 military blazer very nice truck!

I personally would go with VW over Mercedes because it seems most Mercedes have power everything and on older models that is really just more crap to brake i do not have first hand experience with a benzo (but taken many) so who am I to say. Just my opinion.

Turbo is must with diesel for fast acceleration as Zippoz explained the lower max RPMS... my cummins recommends shifting at 2500rpm. i always prefer manual transmissions too - but i live in the mountains, if your a flat lander automatics are fine but still tend to not last as long.

It's weird a big diesel truck is not that fast but you feel like you could pull a house down. My truck actually runs BETTER with a hefty load on it than empty. Made for hauling I guess.

Love my diesel. Maybe a pic of mine in a min.

I mean, shitty diesel trucks are.. when I used to plow, I drive a piece of shit chevy flatbed from the 80's..that thing was dirty. It burned black smoke when you hit the gas hard.

There's a huge difference between a shitty old smoke spewing diesel than the newer models. I love the Turbo Diesel trucks -- smooth

it's amazing the a 6cylinder cummins can put out so much power.

first time I pulled like 5 tons of gravel 65mph uphill i was amazed.

i bet you can't guess where I hit a deer with that front bumper.

mine dumps too...

everyone post pics of your diesel now too

Thanks for the compliments.

I have about 28 years of house payments left on the house.

Truck is paid for. With a flatbed diesel I can get like every toy imaginable now.

Jetskis, boats, rvs, dirtbikes, go karts, etc.

I will have a 5th wheel down at Wakarusa.

That was my main motivation for getting a big truck. Toys. I would like to get a newer one (just off warranty) and mod the hell out of the engine and get like 500HP.

oh yeah BTW there is a warn 10,000# winch under that front bumper.

does your truck drive better when hauling too? mine obviously rides better but the truck seems happier when pulling or at least a payload in back.

yeah i almost got a powerstroke until i started talking to some truckers and they all said cummins was powerful enough, 40% less moving part (less shit to break), and was in 65% of OTR trucks.

The appeal to diesels used to be the gas prices but now diesel is nearly as expensive as regular gasoline.

However, diesel engines can last forever..

diesel here is $2.70 today

gas is $2.35

the fuel economy is not longer a reason to buy diesel

not that bad here..

2.50 for petro
2.60 for diesel

$80 to drive 600 miles in a big ass truck is not that bad.

gas 2.45
diesel 2. 49
veggie oil free

Since it seems like a relevant thread, if ya'll are considering SVO, go with a neoteric system from plantdrive.com I work with SVO conversions all the time, and can't tell you how many other people's systems have screwed up, only to be retrofitted with parts from plantdrive. Sure, if you live in Germany and can get virgin veggie oil at the pump, maybe Elsbett is the way to go, but in the states, particularly if you are collecting your own WVO, go with plantdrive, you will thank me after your first million miles of free fuel.

Best I've found is Japanese places. But even the local college bar/food places have acceptable oil. Get canola if you can, it's a little better than soy...
