psilocybin as a treatment for depression
    #13924328 -

Ive been trying to overcome my depression for a few years now, never saw a psychiatrist because I don't want to be put on anti-depressants. What Ive found over the past 2 years is that psilocybin, taken in small quantities, like 1g-2g, makes me feel relief of depression. I feel social and happy like I used to.

Ive started to do some research on this and this is what Ive found today:

from ABCNEWS
Quote:
It remains unclear how these drugs exert their action in the brain, but anecdotal evidence and some earlier studies indicate they may help a variety of psychiatric conditions, says David E. Nichols, founder of the Heffter Institute, in Santa Fe, and professor of medical chemistry and molecular pharmacology at Purdue School of Pharmacy in West Lafayette, Ind.

Nichols says there is some indication these drugs work on the serotonin pathway in the brain, the same target of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor drugs Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft, used to treat depression, anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder.

from MEDSCAPE
Quote:
The study authors note that this may be due to the drugs' effect on patients' altered brain circuits and neurotransmitter systems, including serotonin and glutamate systems, according to recent neuroimaging data.

Quote:
# A recent review of studies conducted in the 1960s found that psilocybin and LSD are effective treatments for OCD, and a current study showed that psilocybin significantly reduced symptoms of OCD in treatment-resistant patients within an average of 2 hours and lasted up to 24 hours.
# Several studies are currently looking at psilocybin and LSD as treatments for anxiety and depression in patients with terminal cancer, with 1 recently completed trial finding that psilocybin improved mood and reduced anxiety and lasted between 2 weeks and 6 months.

Anyone else here feel the same way; like psilocybin is your cure?

You can get St. John's Wort supplement to treat mild to moderate depression. For one, it is a lot cheaper than any cubensis dose, it's legal and it has scientific literature to back up my claims.

Let me know what you think.

"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here." - Richard Dawkins

Yes i feel the same way.

Im in a pretty shitty depression right now too, the feeling is right in my chest and throat area, iv been like this for a year and 1/2.

The only things that have helped me feel "normal" was E and shrooms. But the feeling comes back the next day like always, its fucking relentless and its goddamn depressing.

I was thinking of a shroom like pill that acts the same way on your brain to make you feel normal, or happy but not get you so high at the same time. Something that can last longer then just the 2-3 hours of high time with shrooms.

St. John's Wort never worked for me, I gave it a good try too

If you're going to do the shrooms thing - consider that long term benefits are only going to come about through a change in perspective or constant low/mild dosing. A single high dose however, can be the catalyst for a permanent change in perspective.

I don't like how the article seems to suggest that because two drugs mimic the same neurotransmitter that they are by default both possibly candidates for treating some disorder that is currently known to be treated by one of the two.
