on topic of the thread i dont think we evolved for cannabis.. but i do think there is a "drug drive" like a sex drive

fair enough statement. But there would be seeds and or carbonized remains of seeds, which there aren't.

And again, if it effected human evolution, it would have had to have been wide spread BEFORE the advent of agriculture, which there is no evidence of.

Natural medicinal prodects were often searched for, including rare ones. That was all the medicine they had. Can't go to the pharmacist nearest you and pick up a bottle of oxys. :grin:

Right, near as I can tell, hemp had a relatively small area of origin and was spread later by man because of the many uses of the plant including fiber, food, fuel, and fun.

Humans are likely to use tons plants in their environments before they "settle" on ones they like/find useful. Cannabis is a natural painkiller on the most obvious level. It's quite effective, too, causing very little side-effects. And judging by the pungent smell of the plants (more potent usually being more powerful) once a species discovered it, especially if it were a hunting and gathering sort, it wouldn't be too hard to re-identify similar plants for similar uses.

How "recently" would you estimate humans have been using cannabis, then?
And how much do you think they have "evolved" since?

depends on location.

I would say probably no more than 60-50,000 years on the upper limit for people near where it grew naturally, much less early for most populations.

No real signifigant evolution between then and now.

Nothing is "evolving all the time" although you maybe could say things are mutating all the time. Things only evolve when factors are selected for or against in a manner that effects reproductive fitness.

This theory doesn't make any sense. Aside from the fact that cannabis doesn't really confer any selective advantage to humans unless they're sick in very specific ways, there's also the obvious fact that animals get high too. Humans just LIKE cannabis, for reasons tangentially related to the mental capacities we've evolved.

(By the way, don't let the name of the "cannabinoid" neurotransmitters and receptors deceive you. They are named that way because they were discovered by mapping the locations of the brain affected by THC, which does its work at cannabinoid receptors because of its structural similarity to the brain's cannabinoid neurotransmitters.)

As for mushrooms, well, I'm of the McKenna camp that mushroom-eating MAY have had an influence on human evolution. But again, since animals are affected by them as well, I disagree that humans evolved in order to use mushrooms.

Human height has steadily increased on average as long as long as any sort of record has been kept :shrug:

Would it not be plausible that other aspects of the body have not changed as well even in such a small time scale?

I think height has increased not because of genes but because of the modern diet and advances in medical technology.

For example, Chinese people are fucking short because of the Chinese diet, but second-generation Chinese Americans are as tall as other Americans.

Yeah that is true, though I suspect as with much its a combination of diet and genetics... many Africans are very tall regardless of having a poor diet or not, American indians were noted for being very tall as well - while the mayan indians noted for being very short.
The average Indian male is still around 5'3'' though :haha:
