Humans Evolved for Cannabis?

It seems reasonable to believe that the human body has evolved to utilize cannabis, and I remember it being mentioned by a researcher in some clip I watched a while back. However, I've had trouble finding anything more on it.

Any information that anyone wants to put forward? It seems reasonable, since it's been in human use at least as long as civilization. I'd love to here any thoughts, and especially to see any evidence. Thanks everyone!  :bigweed:

Terence mckenna made that theory except with psilocybin mushrooms...

BUT I think the same could be said about Cannabinoids...I mean what..dont we produce our own natural cannabinoids?

Cannabis was not only used in industry but also in "religious" means...That could mean cannabis is likely to have been taken for years before that point in history.

I think cannabis use could of been dated bake to one million years ago...A million give or take years being required for any evolutionary change much less the intense evolution of man...

Maybe ancient Africa had many naturally and possibly amazing sub species of Cannabis growing around their continent...Probably Indica..

By the way, this theory proves humans evolved so that they could get high on cannabis, Terrence's theory proves humans evolved FROM eating shrooms.

I'm not necessarily saying that they evolved to get high on cannabis, just that the human body evolved to use it in more beneficial and less damaging ways.

Very true so its not exactly the "Same" thing But I mean our bodies evolved in response to a naturally occurring chemical taken wherever region it grew in at the time...

Look into "the Botany of Desire" by Michael Pollan.  HAs a great deal on cannabis/plants and humans coevolving.  Good read/video if you can find it.

I believe humans have evolve to survive their own environnement just like every other species and all life on earth

Canabis has THC perhaps to prevent a bug from killing it or to prevent animal from eating too much of it.

As for us, well, THC, we love it.

Just like mushrooms... If a deer eats like a huge patch of psilocybe, and trips like a motherfucker and dont like it, hes never gonna eat mushroom ever again..

Regarding plant and human relationships, this book makes you re-consider who is actually modifying who.

For humans to evolve for cannabis, whatever that means, it would require that humans who smoked had a reproductive advantage over those that did not. You can speculate all you want, but your not going to be able to prove that connection.

Further, if weed is indiginous to the northern India region, whereas humans did most of their evolving in africa, there can be no connection.

thirdly, not all humans left africa at the same time or together, so for hemp to become spread around enough for it to effect evolution, there would have had to have been ancient trade routes spreading the plant all over, which there is no evidence of at an early enough time for it to have effected evolution.

I'm not saying I don't believe Ancient Man didn't know about the effects of weed, There is some good evidence that they did. BUT I have heard of no evidence that smoking weed existed at an early enough stage to have effected evolution. Seriously, it would have had to have started earlier than H. Sapiens, like with H. Habilis or Heidelburgensis. Pipes likely would have been made with bone or horn/antler material, so it is seriously within the realm of possiblity that IF there were some we'd have at least one or two examples.

Rather than preventing animals from eating, perhaps it produces cannabinoids to attract (some) animals...


It's known that deer will grub on your plant if it's outdoors. I've heard of deer returning time after time to nibble on the plants if you don't have some sort of fence to protect them.


Same thing with mushrooms...I've heard stories from people that have outdoor patches of cyanescens, where the deer will seek out the mushrooms and devour the patch. And continuously return to the patch looking for more.


And of course the ol' stories of Reindeer eating Amanita muscaria...



Most animals dig altered states just as much as we do...
