Could I use a fishtank for growing mushrooms?
    #13887415 -

If so, what tek would be best?

The fishtank is 30x12x18 and is glass.

I have an Ecuador syringe, verm, coir, and perlite, and half-pint mason jars.

Other than watching RR's videos, I dont know much about growing, but I'd like to give it another shot.

You would be much better off building a SGFC as outlined in RR's BRF
video.

Explain why he should and shouldn't, rather than suggesting otherwise.

a fishtank wont allow good FAE(fresh air exchange), you can use it, but the fruits will be minimal compared to if you build a SGFC(shotgun fruiting chamber) like shown in RR's video's..

Other than RR's videos, you don't need to know much. Do it like that, it will work.

I've seen in years no more aquariums.

A SGFC provides better FAE, more consistent humidity, and is easier
to dial in the needed growth parameters then using a fishtank. Its
hard to provide proper FAE inside a sealed fish tank.

That enough reasons for you moron? Opps sorry I mean moronicus.

Ya, Shot gun fruiting chamber would be the way to go. The problem with an aquarium is, There is no good way to make sure you get proper air exchange. I know what your thinking, Ill use a air pump. Let me be the first to tell you air pumps suck for that. Where as A SGFC will have 1/4 inch holes, ever 2 inches on all 6 sides. This will provide ideal air exchange. Also you can get a tote to build one for less than $10. I know, you already have an aquarium, that you just want to use. Well dont. Go to the pet store, and get you a couple gold fish to put in that thing, because thats about all they are good for, when it comes to mycology.

Mushroom cult elitism at it's best. Now I understand why some of you people are despised.

P.S: Thank you, roaddog.

You were flippant with me, Using the search engine will tell you all
the many reasons a SGFC is superior to an aquarium. I was nice enough
to give my opinion and you came along and basically told me to explain
the pro's and con's of both situations or do not post at all. That is
why I tossed it right back at you buddy.

seriously moron, you tell people to elaborate on their answers, without actually supplying any information yourself, then come in with a really general post saying "that's what fans are for" which is a terrible idea...  The "mushroom cult elitism" as you call it comes from those who have taken the time to do their homework before making educated inquiries (there are a number of books that can be picked up on the subjects at hand, RR's videos are great resources, and as evilmush said, the search function is your friend!!), as opposed to those who just want to nudge you in the ribs and ask you for the answers at test time...  how about next time, you explain why he should or shouldn't instead of telling other people to.  If you really want to help, do your homework and tell the person what they want to hear, or tell them to do their homework themselves...

The best advice i can give to any of the new people is to read, read, READ and then ask questions...  A lot of information is out there.  Spend more time reading in mush cult, moron, instead of hanging out at the pub and OTD, and you might have some better answers to help people with...

sorry to everyone else for ranting (kind of edgy right now, it's been a month since i've smoked pot)...  and to the OP, like was stated previously, aquarium is not so good, SGFC=good... check 'em out.

Guys, he said he has coir... which leads me to believe he wants to make a monotub or something, NOT a fruiting chamber. :P If you're making a tub dude, I don't see why a fishtank wouldn't work.

The half pint jars lead me to believe he is doing cakes, but you could
spawn cakes to bulk if you wanted. Even if he was wanting to do a mono
spawned using cakes I would recommend a proper tote with polyfil
stuffed holes instead of a a glass fishtank.

you might be able to re-enforce the glass and drill a few holes through it, but sounds like a bunch of broken/cracked glass to me...  best bet is to go get yourself a plastic tote, you're gonna have to spend a few bucks to get started, but you'll find that the costs in this hobby are rather minor.  It just takes time and knowledge...  your best bet would be to get yourself some brown rice flour and make up some PF cakes if you're dead set on using what you already have (which are well outlined in the RR video, either way, you'll need a few more supplies).  If you do want to start off doing bulk projects using your coir, i would recommend getting some quart jars and some WbS or rye grain, and reading up on grain prep, and pasteurization of bulk substrates (once again, outlined rather well in the RR videos, but you're going to have to do a little more homework on this one and also need a few more supplies).  Then, depending on how bulk of substrates, either read up on mono-tubs or using trays or blocks in a fruiting chamber.
Once again, if dead set on using what you have just to get started and get an idea of what you're getting into without too much cost, you can get away with using your aquarium as an FC, but expect to be doing a lot of fanning, and even still, don't expect great results... in which case, you're still going to need to buy some brf to start your cakes or some quart jars to start your grains for your trays/blocks...
Tell us more about what it is you have in mind, and maybe we can point you in a better direction...

Mushrooms will fruit in almost any container, its more of a matter of yield. If you put a cake in a aquarium it will fruit but you will likely get small and thin mushrooms.
