Stress and the top dog.
    #13830944 -

I watched a National Geographic special on Stress last night.  Very interesting. They were looking at Baboons in their hierarchy  and taking blood samples check for stress hormones. The meanest, fiercest, baddest top dog baboons all had the least stress. The further down the chain the worse it was and the shorter the life span with hardening of the arteries and high blood pressure and the same shit we have.

Now this is quite interesting to me.  Nature (you could read nature as God or Ultimate consciousness if you like)  favors the strongest, meanest, cunningest, over the meek, mild, fearful, peaceful.  Not just with most all the pussy and the best and most food but with a more relaxed and comfortable life.

I would live to hear a discussion on this.

Funny, you would think being at the top would mean you had more to lose and others trying to take what you have, and so more of a stressed out life.

Right, it's very interesting isn't it.  I wonder what it feels like to be on top of the heap?

That is motherfuckin life, dawg! It just feels right, and darwinism in action! Social animals are fucked up, yall

but not to nitpick... but you say (this case the baboon) that nature favors the strongest, meanest, etc over the meek, mild, fearful, PEACEFUL.... but then say the stronger one is more relaxed and comfortable life? See the contradiction? How would you qualify its life as more relaxed and comfortable if it isnt natural for it to be mild and peaceful at times? Ah but at the bottom as an animal they operate under the domineering passions - they are drives that want to be fulfilled (and this requires strife) until it reaches sucess and can enter a little homeostasis, whereas the defeated is unfulfilled and wrought with nasty short end of the stick darwinism - doomed to a bad dice roll of darwinism or something - but as an organism it still tries - and prudence of nature says, youre gonna die early bitch...

But we humans have confounded this to a certain degree... we have an "ascetic" side (passions brought into question) - a lil secret weapon/vice - depending

Stress hormones? What is the utility in these factors that were more present in the less dominate baboons? Natural blow back or perhaps a natural spur? Were these less dominate ones still striving for power? Had they aged and lost it? Etc... relevant questions, no?

Anyway it seems logical that if you are at the top of a social hierarchy you are going to be least stressed, especially if we would posit the baboons as "enjoying" less consciousness than we humans. That is, they find themselves in their place with natural ease, not second guessing or planning that much, instinctual basically. I mean, right!? Chauvinistic? (or jealous?)

But then again what is stress? How does it enter consciousness? We can best measure by behavior? Or like what they said effects such as blood pressure and etc.

As for the human, perhaps it could be said that, it all depends on the relative social situation... I suppose we could assume that given the many different cultures and many billions of humans, the individual is taxed by differing expectations - not only from society and from differing culture, but also biological needs & thus how they properly fit together... Which is more powerful?

Maybe higher consciousness is higher gullibility to some sense... wouldn't we say that if you were raised by very domineering priestly like people, you would be more stressed by power than by being meek? That is to say, your formative years predicate what feels right? Or can we really shed that biology? Power can be played out psychologically in the human, right? Muhahahaha

I guess humanity has confounded what it is to be an alpha male or something, wretches!

Butttttttttttt our culturing has allowed an ambiguous state to flourish and many of us find ourselves in comfy bourgeoisie lifes, food is a plenty and hopefully pussy is pretty available, a good number of females even favor beta male characteristics if you at least get yourself out there and not hermit... so how could our stress (if any) under this guise relate to those defeated baboons? (who live in a ostensibly harsher, more natural setting) At least theirs is "more natural" or something...  oh and are those submissive baboons even getting any? I dont know how their society works...

This is an interesting observation.  Of course you are correct that being peaceful is the desired state "subjectively".  But in most animals cases anyway violence is the gateway. Now can we see the Neocons pov?

how would you compare this with humans?  what qualities in humans would resemble those of "top dog" Baboons?

is the "meanness" of a baboon the same kind of meanness humans possess?  could one be more instinctual and the other more emotional?

Imo at core it's the same.  The researcher who spent 15 years in the field with them said frankly he didn't like them. They seemed vindictive and cruel and scheming and were usually looking for an advantage an picking on the weak.  Sounds like the business/social world to me.:satansmoking:

We of course convoluted to extremes these things due to our advanced scheming capabilities. We are expert at making it seem like we are innocent and working for the higher good.

obviously good, but what about the downside?  would there be any?  ignorance is bliss, but what about missing out on the richness of deeper life experiences.  this is assuming the top dogs in our culture are who i think they are... businessmen and players and such who have to maintain a perfect image and keep themselves at a certain level of superficiality.

Top dogs are satisfied and aren't attracted to the so called deeper experiences. Thy are in full play mode.

My guess would be fear. I didn't see the show but did the baboons all interact with each other in natural conditions or was it controlled?

If it was natural my guess would be that the baboons are fearful of the 'top dog' which imo creates a significant amount of stress. But if controlled you would have to factor in the human interaction which would make the examination flawed imo.

On the shorter life span, well.. wouldn't a top dog have more of a will to survive? The others living in a state of stress would have less drive imo.

About the feeling of being on top.. I've felt that way through one of my delusions and it is a great euphoria the feeling of being important / ruling over others.. basically I'm guessing fear is the greatest factor in it.

I thought you never watched television:satansmoking:

  As to the topic it doesn't surprise me.  Usually when people are confident they are relaxed.  Although baboons aren't human, so the evidence isn't necessarily conclusive. (although it's safe to say it's pretty damn close)

I'm reading The Philosopher and the Wolf by Mark Rowlands and he brings the theory that primates evolved their intelligence by developing the abilities of cheating and manipulating, basically taking advantage of others within their own social group.

He goes on to say we evolved using that same intelligence and taking it to higher levels.

It's interesting that yesterday I was thinking why aren't monkeys more popular as pets. And the conclusion seems to be that in some way they're just too similar to us when dealing with emotions and will literally fight for their place in the hierarchy at home. They're not possible to subdue like dogs and cats...

reminds me of when i was a kid, before the drugs.  by your definition i could have been considered a top dog.  and that wasn't too long ago, maybe 8 years, so i still remember some of the feelings i had.  i wasn't stressed, but there was a feeling of incompleteness at times, that there was something else out there that i was missing out on.  this feeling dissipated the more i got into meditation and psychedelics.
