grow oysters on my tree stump?
    #12313698 -

Ive had a few jars of rye colonized with king oysters.  I also have a magnolia tree stump from a tree that was cut down about 6 months ago.  This morning I drilled a bunch of 1" holes all over the top of the stump.  The holes are about 4" apart.  I filled the holes with the colonize rye grain and then used the sawdust from drilling the holes to pack them in tight. Next I watered everything decently and then poured all the rest of the sawdust all over the top of the stump.  I then covered it with cardboard and tied it on pretty good.  Watered it again and then tied a plastic grocery bag over it.

Can I expect anything to happen (yes yes yes!) or is my experiment doomed to failure (no no no!)?

EDIT: Pearl Oysters not King.  Thanks for pointing that out Mycelio.

i would say probably yes, but maybe not this year. aren't you supposed to use wax to seal the holes?

Could work... personally I would have inoculated dowels and used those to inoculated the stump. Grain gets contaminated quite easily. Let us know what happens!

I wouldn't expect too much from this experiment. If at all, King oysters do not fruit well from trees, logs or stumps, though they can be cultivated successfully on sawdust with bran or other supplements.

thanks.  well ill try and keep my expectations in check.  id be sort of happy if it just helped decompose the stump faster.

i think sawdust spawn is more recommended for outdoor growing. too many critters enjoy grains.
Plus what Mycelio said doesnt sound too good for you either.

But i wish you luck .

you can see mycelium coming out of the hole i drilled, stuffed with rye, then sawdust (from drilling) and then cardboard.. i didnt have any wax.

my daughter used the cardboard to color on before it got recycled.. thus the crayons.

My daughter showed me some mushrooms growing in the yard today!

im curious how theyre going to turn out.  they get a lot of sun there and it started to get hot today, must have gotten close to 90.  Humidities been 50s in the middle of the day to 80s in the middle of the night.

i thought they had to colonize the stump before they would fruit.  It hasnt even been quit a month since I drilled the stump and filled it with oyster grains.  mushrooms are crazy.

Your king oyster is a pearl oyster, which should do fine on solid wood.

I see pins on my magnolia stump again!  I'll post more pics if they turn into nice mushroom.  I've got another magnolia tree stump I'm considering taking the same approach to.

They're pinning inside the holes I drilled.  I think it's created a perfect little microclimate for pin formation.  Whenever it rains the water stands in those holes for a little while. The inside stays nice and moist for a lot longer then the outside of the stump.

That's great! This is a cool project and I always appreciate when people come through with the long term updates. Thanks for sharing!

Cheers.

Thanks, it's pretty exciting to me as well.  A couple people mentioned that the photo's didn't look like oyster pins.  they're the same color as the pearls that where there last year... what do you folks think?

It's raining here today and the holes that the oyster pins are in are full of water.  I don't know how long it's going to be standing in there.  Think this will be a problem?

They will be just fine, they are well established.
No stopping them now!

Lower a tiny basket into the hole and say
"It puts the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again."

Somehow it just seems right.

Worried that they may not be oyster mushrooms... wish I could see them from the bottom.
