Lots of oysters
    #1351874 - 03/05/03 08:20 AM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I never relised that my elm tree that died five years ago was growing oysters.  The stump is three feet High with a six foot diameter.  For the past couple years in the warmer months it would be covered in  hundreds of mushrooms that I now know are oysters.
How long will my stump produce these mushrooms?  They are a nice golden color.  And are of a pretty large size.  This year I will harvest them and take cultures and prints.  Cant wait
How would I be able to tell what strain it is.  Do elm oysters only grow on elms?

Are you sure they are oysters?

Elm oysters (Hypsizygus ulmarius) are not true oysters (Pleurotus). They're very rare in nature so if that's what you got then you should definitely clone it! But it's quite possible that you got one of the other Pleurotus species that are more common.
They should be growing for several years on the stump of that size.

Take some pictures next time they grow!

From the color description I am wondering if they are oysters at all.
