I love the originals, I'm die hard for the first night/dawn/day

but the recent land, diary, and survival just don't have the same cultural commentary that sat under the surface of the originals, lending them depth

Diary was the only one of the three that was any good, and I thought it was really good.  It only lacked in gore, which is also partly because it was shot Blair Witch/Cloverfield style.

Well fuck that then, I hated blair witch and cloverfield and I hate the shaky cam.

Guess I'll give Bruiser a look.

The camera isn't shaky in Diary, I meant it's shot from a first-person point of view, that's about all they have in common with Blair Witch (Never saw Cloverfield).  It's a bunch of film students that are documenting their struggle against a zombie outbreak, and it's up there with the original three in terms of classic zombie action IMO.

I agree but trust me, it's better than any of the ones made after it.  Except for Diary of course.

I love the original but the remake (or re-imagining) was actually surprisingly good. In fact, the theater where I saw it was packed and it was only one of a few movies I've ever seen that got a standing ovation from the audience! It rated very well on imdb.com, coming in just under the original.

I thought the Dawn remake was really good, especially the utilization of the "fast" zombies while not being cheesy as fuck.  Still doesn't dethrone the original at all.  The best of the remakes was the 1991 Savini remake of Night IMO.

I enjoyed the dawn remake, but I still like the slow zombies and original format more. The stumbling consumerism and constant inevitability of death lurking and moaning just outside.

I also liked the Savini remake, but once again, I found it to be lacking. I really like how in the original trilogy the female character goes from being weak and insane, to controlled by her biology, to the strongest character. Also, the ignorance to Ben is pretty poignant, given the time of production.

Savini is really a master of theatrics and make-up, though. Fuck all this shiny CGI gore. Real movie quality theatrical makeup is just disgustingly realistic.

Oh don't get me wrong, the original three are THE BEST and it's indisputable.  But of the remakes, Savini's takes the cake IMO.  Day of the Dead remake should just be deleted from history.  Aside from a pseudo-Bub near the end, it didn't even resemble the original at all.  I just hope that if GAR remakes Dawn himself that he doesn't make it stupid and by stupid I mean CGI gore and taking generous liberties with the original storyline.
