Router Question
    #13712612 -

So...almost all wireless devices in my house NEED to have static IPs. I'm not sure why.

Laptops are the only ones that manage to get on my network by just putting the password in. iPod touch, multiple Android phones, Wii and MAYBE my PS3 (don't remember) all need to have the IP information put in manually.

I haven't really messed with the settings at all, other than some port forwarding and a password applied to my wireless. All the devices get stuck at "acquiring IP" stage.

I assume something is wrong with my DNS, but I don't really know what it could be.

Feel free to use a *bit* of jargon with me. I took a Cisco course in school for 2 years. I learned quite a bit about networking, but I'm very rusty...and never really did home networks, only stuff on huge routers for businesses with VPNs and junk like that

umm, well, if your computer has internet your default gateway is fine. so yeah all the i.p.'s on every device couldn't be messed up all at once, it has to be your dns

you are asking the wrong person, but for someone who took a 2 year Cisco class in school, you SHOULD know what you are doing. i took a 3 week Cisco tech class, and never passed the ccna

all i remember is configuring routers that we didn't link up to isp designated modems such as Comcast or at&t, and using commands such as config t and switching between privilege mode and user mode etc

none of this you do with a router you connect to an isp modem, because that isn't an actual router, but a multi layer switch, as far as I know

and for hubs and bridges I think you get the slowest connection because you can have multiple ethernets hooked up and when it sends a signal even if the devices are off i think it doesn't 'decide' and sends the transmission to each one without sifting through and picking an i.p.

i could be wrong about what I've heard about that, but those things are stone aged so whatever if i don't know about them who cares

this is about all i know, this and the 254 maximum subnet thing. let me know if you find your answer, you are configuring each ipv4 address manually? well go for it just make sure you put in the right dns and default gateway. might as well make each device the next one up e.g.

192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2
192.168.0.3

or whatever it allows you to use thanks

btw how could you do stuff on huge routers for businesses with virtual private networks but not know how to set the i.p.'s for each individual device on a network?

shame shame

also, make sure you are using straight through instead of crossover ethernet, but doubt you would use anything else, because you have to make crossover by switching around the blue green green blue whatever it is

I think you may have misunderstood me. Everything works fine when I put in the static IP information, I just hate having to enter it for everyone who comes over to my house and wants to connect to my wireless.

its not DNS.. DNS is for matching domain names with ip addresses.

you are having problems with DHCP.

there should be an option in your router to enable/disable the DHCP server. make sure its enabled. it should be under LAN settings or whatever..

no. the routers you buy in BestBuy or whatever are routers with 4 switching ports.
