enable dhcp on router then set your tcp/ip properties to obtain IP/DNS/Gateway automatically would be the easiest way.

Outside of that your going to need to know all the info to fill the blanks. most importantly you router's IP address which probably default to something like 192.168.0.100 or 192.168.1.1. That IP goes into the Gateway field of tcp/ip properties. If DHCP isn't enabled then your going to have to configure the router to use a range of IPs that you plan to assign to your computer.

start->run->cmd
type: ping routerip <--- obviously this needs to be a valid router ip address

If your laptop is on a different subnet than the network you're trying to connect to, you can use a Cisco routing mode (not standard IP) called "IP Un-numbered" to effectively turn the router into a bridge. Then you can ping your side of the router with it's local IP address and the other side will be routed according to what you have in the routing table.
