forgot, Would a wet vermiculite layer in the bottom of a terrarium be optimal for casing humidity? (70-75%)?--rather than cake humidity using perlite (90-95%)

even casing colonization is vital to a good pinset. You should definately sprinkle light casing over the spots that have colonized early. With an even coloniztion you can expect to see huge yeilds compared to uneven colonization.Vermiculite? lol NO, the reason perlite works is because it is extremely pourus.. perlite and verm are two completely different things.. just mist your casing 2-3 times a day. vivid

Having an even casing has its advantages. By covering up those two first spots of growth you will facilitate a much more even pin set. Thus, you can harvest all, or most, fruits at once, allowing the mycellium to recover better for a good second flush. You can get an air pump for under 10 bucks. Optimal casing humidity is 85-92%, I believe. Stick with perlite. Just try to maintain 90%. The air pump should help.------------------ Baldy

okay, well today there were about 10 spots, but they were on the "perimeter" of the casing. I covered them with verm. moistened with 1:10 ratio of H2O2:water. I'll wait about 3 more days until birth. I am going to use perlite and a fishtank air pump for air as well. The terrarium will have a hole about 10 inches by 12 inches with an American Air Filter covering it. A thick plastic sheet will be casually placed over that but not airtight by any means, to allow air flow. oh yeah..the container im using now is too deep, and its metal. For good gas exchange, doesnt there need to be some kind of hole or something in the bottom to let out CO2? Is there any other way i could let out exess CO2 out of the casing layer besides drilling a hole in the bottom? The pot im using is about 10 inches deep. the casing layer fills about 2 1/2 inches.[This message has been edited by BoomerZ (edited April 23, 2000).]

a small hole in the bottom to drain excess water/co2 is a good idea. stick a plug of cotton in it to filter any backwash.
