Re: How do you help someone who's severely bipolar get/maintain a job? [Re: owls]

Consistent healthy diet and exercise helps(real exercise, weights and some light cardio for 30m every single day). As well as stimulating hobbies. Gotta get her out of the mind set that she can't or won't do something. A healthy body really does help the mind. If you have doctors telling you that something can't be done and you believe it, you will never overcome anything.

A lot of people with mental illness don't mesh well with normal society because its dull and unfulfilling. You either have to suck it up and rise above it all or wallow in your own shit. Working towards a goal, no one wants a piece of shit job. You get a shit job suck it up work towards a higher goal than most people even dream of and once you achieve it any "mental illness" will only add to the creativity and fun in your life.

It might also be useful to educate her on the mechanics of her illness learn every single thing there is to learn about it. So when the depression and the strange thoughts start happening she knows why they are happening. Once you know why and how something happens it becomes a lot less of a big deal.

Lithium works well for many. Cognitive behavirol therapy has had some success. I think the one thing most people lack in their lives is a purpose. A center driven purposeful life. Thomas Edison was classic bipolor he we very intelegent and was able to utilize and harness his manic episodes into projects he would work on unitl he crashed. Depending on the severity of the symptoms medications alone can help but I think the number one problem is not being able to recognize the symptoms and having the discipline to control ones behavior rather than just reacting. In limited cases ect (electro charge therapy) can help but only in the most severe cases. I would recommend against pyschadellics unless they are prescribed and utilized in a secure setting with a trusted therapist who knows what they are doing. Not someone who thinks they know what they are doing. There is a huge difference. Support groups can help as well. myc

Perfectly articulated.  I agree completely and could never have said it better.

Hi,

Here's my view on the matter. I also have been diagnosed with bipolar 2, that basically means harrowing depression and short episodes of elated, expansive mood and high productivity, creativity and little sleep.

Labels are just that, labels and they just help you deal with your problems more efficiently, I am lucky in that I am a medical student and I understand what is happening to me to some degree, so in that same sense I can see that the understanding of these diseases is pretty limited, mind you not bad, but limited. Every case is different and has distinct features. What you can do is educate yourself as much as you can on the data and information that exists and then see how and to what extent it applies to your case and after that work with someone that has clinical experience on your treatment. Work with them, you know better then anyone what you go trough, they know better then you what drugs can do.

What I can say about bipolar is that it isn't psychological, you can't just fight against it, "think it away", it's a disease of the brain, or maybe better put, it's a structural difference of the brain from what is considered the norm. Our brains just don't process information in the same way a healthy one does, and to correct that you most often then not need medication. But then again this does not always apply, it's also about how much these symptoms impair your functionality and impact your everyday life, how symptomatic you are if you will.

And psychedelics? My reaction was MOTHERFUCKING NO!Trainwreck of an idea! but then again it depends on the case and on how everybody is, just know that they can trigger mania/hypomania and if that is not impairing enough, depression will be and it always follows.

OP if you have any more questions or think I could help you and your friend (I have some great links I have found) drop me a pm, I am beginning to be a small expert on the matter.
