Trouble with reading concentration
    #13638717 -

I know, everyone gets distracted occasionally when reading, but my problem goes a bit further. Imagine trying to read while people are talking. That's how it is for me all the time. This is especially a problem because I read all the time.

I know that different foods, atmospheres, moods, times of day, can change brain chemicals considerably. There are, rarely, occasions when I can read right on without stopping or rereading, and it feels great, so I know that somehow it is possible.

Im not sure, but I heard that fish oil lubricates receptors in the brain to induce smoother thought process, so maybe I can try this.

Anyway, its a real bother. Does anyone have any suggestions?

This.

It's tough to do, especially on a forum like this, but don't put too much faith in drugs.

I'm now going to contradict myself and mention that if you have trouble wanting to put the effort into reading as opposed to passive entertainment, black tea or something else with a moderate amount of caffeine might help.

Is this assigned reading or are you reading things you actually want to read?

I've been using DMAE recently with success with concentrating, you might give that a try. I made a thread about it in the Pub if you wanna check that out - I describe it in more detail there.

Otherwise, I will always recommend a good multivitamin, if you're not already taking one.

I'm sure that daily exercise has been linked to concentration also.

I find I have weird concentration skills too. Sometimes it's great, most days it's pretty bad. One thing that always gets me is how my concentration goes up after about 20 minutes of reading, so I can't let the first 10 or so get me down...gotta just keep pluggin away. After a couple hours though I can't concentrate any more. I don't know how some people read for hours and hours in one sitting...I would love to be able to do that.

-Its not assigned reading.

-Yeah Ill check that out.

-Its always starting something that is the hardest part, then you get into it, whether it's a book or some sort of project.
