What does mycelium look like at first signs of growth?
    #13638385 -

I inoculated 5 1/2 pint jars 4 days ago, and I looked at them today with a magnifying glass.

Almost a inch or two under where my inoculation points are, I saw little tiny white splotches; none of them wider than about the size of a pea. I looked at those little white spots under a magnifying glass and it seems to be little tiny white hairs.

All of the jars have at least 2 splotches of little hairs. Only one has 4 splotches under every inoculation hole.

I tried to take a picture but my phone doesn't have a high enough resolution to make a difference.

I was wondering if anyone here has looked at this type of thing before and maybe even have some pictures of newly forming mycelia?

I'm seriously hoping this isn't a contamination :frown:

Yes that IS the newly forming mycelia, later it will form the zhizmatic myc that your looking for...

could it be coincedintal that theyre all under the inoculation points where i put the needle against the glass?

do you think it could be cobweb mold?

no dude, that's where the spores came out of so that's going to be the first place the mycelium grows.

 yes you should.

well without pics we can never be sure... but...

I would have to think if you practiced sterile procedures, and did everything the right way, and flamed your needle till red hot, then its mycelium.

Well, I could only afford boiling them, no pressure cooker. But i boiled them 90 minutes and let them cool for 2 hours.

Inoculated jars in a glove box with alcohol swab on needle and flame with a Bic between every jar.

I'm also sort of worried about my "fine" vermiculite, I'm hoping the mycelium can breathe :frown:

if your seeing growth at your injection points I'm thinking your ok.
As long as it doesn't cover the jar within a week its probably not cobweb. Slow and steady and nice and white is what your looking for.

edit-Also next time let your jars cool a bit longer. The inside of the jar contents can still remain hot even if the glass isn't. If it's too hot inside your jars you can hurt/kill your spores.

Apparently it didn't kill your spores so... I guess your good.
