great post man. My dad was born a few days after this, I can only imagine what it would have been like back then. no internet, everyone goes to the movies to see the news clips. ALl the japs on the west coast being rounded up and put in camps. The sense of national pride.

wtf am i talking about if i was alive back then I'd be flying fighter escort with the air corps over europe or Asia. Talk about one hell of a life..

I saw on the news that most vets of Pearl Harbor are in their 90's, with only a hundred or so left. It's a shame that there are so few left. Are there any WWI vets left?

60 million people died during WWII. I think they deserve that status, everyone who lived in that era.

Killing a bunch of people makes it the greatest generation? I stand by my statement:

wwII was different, it was warrented. I;m not saying it didnt lead to bad things like the arms race and idustrial-mailtary complex, but those men fought and gave thier lives to free Europe and china from the grips of the Axis.

60 million died and it would of been way more if it were not for that generation

Nah, while i see where you're coming from, i honestly fail to see what makes them the 'greatest' generation. Everyone having a common enemy and a short-sighted sense of purpose hardly exemplifies greatness imo. I just see a bunch of people killing each other over a bunch of stupid shit and feeling proud about it. Not that i really care or wanna start a debate or anything.

They are the greatest generation because they survived the great depression as youth, defeated fascism and imperial japan as young adults and pushed for civil rights in their later years.  They had a sense of work ethic, personal responsibility and they helped create the enormous amount of wealth that america has enjoyed ever since.

Contrast this with the generation later...  The greatest generation's children and our parents who, despite inheriting the richest society ever, spent way more than they could afford - buried themselves in debt from overspending and not budgeting and then consistently voted to borrow their way out of it for decades leaving us with the bill.

It very much mirrors what we see with personal fortunes.  Parent works hard, innovates and creates wealth - child has no appreciation or respect and squanders wealth.

Damn, that just about sums it up.

For some reason, I thought this would be about that atrocious movie (that I never actually saw).  I was about to grab my pitchfork and torch.

You make it sound like the people actually ran the country instead of just being tools of the politics of their day. Theres not much to discuss, our views on worth and purpose are clearly very different and we can just leave it at that.
