i live in new york very close to ithaca, and i used to live in nyc.

honestly...  don't bother.  like really - don't bother at all.

i say take all that money you would spend coming to NY and go to Tokyo instead.

http://www.sakura-hotel.co.jp/

go to that youth hostel, hook up with some other foreigners and check out the buddhist art museums there, or go to nikko, and just wander around and check out cute girls.

Maybe you're jaded or used to it but New York City is cool as fuck. I'm sure Tokyo's pretty cool too, but I see no reason to not go to NYC.

o god that place is a fucking hell hole.  the only reason i would go back there is if i got a job there making a lot of money.

first of all, the whole city is black people.  i mean, i'm not racist, but that city caters to black people and rich ass businessmen/engineers/architects only.  it's not really a city for hippies.

second of all, that city is fucking ugly.  they put no thought into the design of the city, it's just a grid of straight streets.  PLUS, the ONLY part of the city that is well kept is the downtown financial district.  uptown is a fucking disgusting mess of abandoned buildings and trash.

brooklyn is shitty too.  it looks like it might have been nice there is the 1900s when rich jewish people owned it, but it's run down and shitty and scary there now.  queens is the same way, until you get out to forest hills.  the whole city is an industrial wasteland of trash, homeless people, and black people.  fuck new york city.

if you are a white hippy, it might be nice to live off your parents and hang around in the st. mark's and NYU area, spending all your money on alcohol and drugs and only eating never ending nacho bowls at cheap restaurants, but otherwise fuck it.

if you want to go to a cool city in the US, go to dallas, texas or somewhere in california.

Woodstock, NY http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodstock,_New_York (not the site of the festival) is pretty much all about :hippie:, art and indie music. About 100 miles north of NYC. Bus from 42nd street goes there. Definitely worth a day or 2 in the Catskill Mt. region. http://www.stormking.org/aboutstormking.html might be worth a day trip, as well as http://www.opus40.org/. Come on up and  I'll buy you a beer in the country:drinklager: . . . :peace:

Dallas? Seriously? I don't think I've ever heard a good thing about Dallas. New York is awesome, it's too bad you hated it so much. I mean I can dig not really liking it, but usually people who don't just aren't city people in general. Fact of the matter is New York is our most internationally recognized city, I think it would be a bit foolish not to go there if it's your first time in America. Plus she's gonna stay in SF for a couple days too. New York has tons of "hippie" stuff going on too. Free concerts galore in the summer, CoSM (well I guess they moved didn't they), MoMA, and undoubtedly plenty of other things.

Things being ugly don't matter to me, I love grit in cities. Ever been to Detroit? Cleveland? Buffalo? Newark? Those are ugly cities, and even then I don't mind it.

lol, shroomism.

This thread is heaps funny, so many different opinions about new york. I reckon Woodstock looks cool. Thanks for the suggestion vinsue. I  can't beleive how many famous people live there. Weirdly, it is sister city to a really small town in my state, Nimbin. Nimbin is the cannabis smoking capital of Australia and has a LSD inspired museum.

If you're in nyc, hang out all day in union square.  easy place to meet people and make friends.  Most interesting part of the city in my opinion.

Try and get a room in the hostel in manhattan.  The one in brooklyn is a little sketch town and a little outa the way.  For cheap beer and free hot dogs (a free meal in NYC is an awesome find) go to Rudy's in Hell's Kitchen.  For a party night go to Greenwich Village.
